Jenna (jenna_marie58) | 86 comments One month until the 2017 Printz winners are announced! What are your final predictions for the winner and possible honor(s)?

message 2: by Jess (new)

Jess (jmor) | 4 comments If it was up to me I'd go with The Female of the Species for the award, and March: Book Three and The Star-Touched Queen with honors.
But it's not up to me! XD
So based on how the Printz has been awarded in the past and the current buzz I'd guess:
The Serpent King for the award. And an honor for We Are the Ants and March: Book Three.
Salt to the Sea is my wild card. I think it's beautifully crafted, but I just have a feeling it's going to get overlooked in this years field of books. Maybe it will win an Odyssey award? The audiobook production is fabulous!

I'm interested to know what other people think. :)

message 3: by Mrs. (new)

Mrs. Weasley | 1 comments My prediction:
The Sun is Also a Star to win. Honors will be The Lie Tree, The Passion of Dolssa, We Are the Ants.

Other possibilities could be March (It won the NBA so it probably won't win the Printz) and Salt to the Sea

message 4: by Dan (new)

Dan (misterdreads) | 2 comments Based on what I have read this year, here are my picks:

The Sun is Also a Star would be my medal pick. Honor books: Highly Illogical Behavior, Booked and either Anna & the Swallow Man or Salt to the Sea (I agree that Salt to the Sea would also make for a great Odyssey Award. The audio was a joy to listen to while driving to work.)

Four books I wish I had read, that my friends all seem to have loved:

Exit, Pursued by a Bear
The Lie Tree
The Serpent King
Wolf Hollow

message 5: by Anne (new)

Anne Bennett (headfullofbooks) | 81 comments My number one pick is one we did not read THE PASSION OF DOLSSA. I love, love, love the book and it has everything a winner should be: spectacular writing, unique plot and setting, vivid characters, interesting (learn something new).

My Honors go to: WE ARE THE ANTS and LIE TREE

I haven't read THE SUN IS ALSO A STAR but I will before the actual voting begins.

Is there any chance for MY LADY JANE? I am in love with that books, too. What a hoot.

I think that STILL LIFE WITH TORNADO and SALT TO THE SEA are well written but are plowing the same field as the author as plowed before.

message 6: by Reving (last edited Dec 27, 2016 04:07PM) (new)

Reving | 53 comments If I could pick, I would pick The Sun is Also a Star. http://revingsblog.blogspot.com/2016/....
That would be my first pick with Still Life with Tornado a close second, http://revingsblog.blogspot.com/2016/..., tied for second with We Are the Ants! http://revingsblog.blogspot.com/2016/...

The Memory Book would be an honor, though I would not be sad if it won the whole deal. http://revingsblog.blogspot.com/2016/...

Nor would I be sad if Exit, Pursued by a Bear won! It would be an honor book for me as well. http://revingsblog.blogspot.com/2016/...

The only one I really, really didn't like was The Lie Tree. http://revingsblog.blogspot.com/2016/... And I would be super sad if this got an honor over one of the others, including The Female of the Species http://revingsblog.blogspot.com/2016/... and Highly Illogical Behavior http://revingsblog.blogspot.com/2016/... and The Girl in the Blue Dress, which again, would be a totally great honor book! http://revingsblog.blogspot.com/2016/...

I also really liked Salt to the Sea, http://revingsblog.blogspot.com/2016/... but not as much as her other books and I didn't get the end. But still, I wouldn't be as disappointed if this received an honor, as if Lie Tree did. Really, really didn't like it. I wasn't IN LOVE with American Girls either, but it still was better than The Lie Tree. http://revingsblog.blogspot.com/searc...

Pretty much I thought it was an incredible year for YA books, especially those we read for this group.
THANK YOU so much for this group and all of the insight and knowledge you all impart!

message 7: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 42 comments The only book that I could not get into this year was the Passion of Dolssa (not my type of book) so I just guaranteed it at least an honor because I never do well picking the Printz winner. I thought 2016 had some strong books and will be interested to see what wins.

Bang Bang Books Yikes, somebody did NOT like The Lie Tree-LOL

message 9: by Librarian Lisa (last edited Dec 29, 2016 08:29AM) (new)

Librarian Lisa | 2 comments Based on what I've read I'm leaning towards The Female of the Species. I didn't care for Yoon's first book, Everything, Everything, but based on what others have said and its subject matter I'd say The Sun Is Also a Star is a good contender.

Books I would like to see get Honors:
Girl in the Blue Coat
We Are the Ants

message 10: by Paul (new)

Paul | 26 comments My favorite won't win, because Philip Reeve gets so little recognition here in the US, and because it's science fiction, but RAILHEAD was my top read this year. The characterization, world building, complicated thematic issues, and wonderful prose all blew me away.

After that, I'd go with DOLSSA, LIE TREE, and SALT TO THE SEA for honor books

message 11: by Anne (new)

Anne Bennett (headfullofbooks) | 81 comments Paul, I like Railhead, too, but I hope it gets an Honor. It does have tremendous world-building.

message 12: by Vicki (new)

Vicki | 12 comments So many titles I haven't read yet, but of those I've read my Printz hunches would be: Girl In the Blue Coat, Serpent King, Highly Illogical Behavior, The Salt to the Sea, & Scythe. Two others I'd like to give a vote to, but not likely contenders are: This Is the Story of You by Beth Kephart and Tell Us Something True by Dana Reinhardt.

message 13: by Jenna (new)

Jenna (jenna_marie58) | 86 comments My predictions:

Winner: The Passion of Dolssa

Honors: Burn Baby Burn, The Lie Tree, When the Moon Was Ours

Ones I don't think will win, but I'd be overjoyed if they did: The Sun Is Also a Star, The Star-Touched Queen

message 14: by Kathy (new)

Kathy Meulen Ellison | 0 comments The ones that I´m hoping will get recognition:

Burn Baby Burn
Salt to the Sea
The Serpent King

One that I haven´t heard mentioned at all is The Crown's Game. I don´t think that it is the winner, but I could see it being an honor.

message 15: by Debrarian (last edited Jan 17, 2017 03:05PM) (new)

Debrarian (deborabilia) | 18 comments Updating to say: just read Salt the the Sea, and it's now my pick for winner.

With honors to:

The Female of the Species (formerly my #1)
The Lie Tree by Frances Hardinge
The Passion of Dolssa (although I'm only halfway through)

Although I'm still thinking about:

Unbecoming
The Smell of Other People's Houses
We Will Not Be Silent,
and maybe Highly Illogical Behavior.

I'm still interested in reading Samurai Rising, Girl in the Blue Coat, and Railhead.

I enjoyed The Sun is Also a Star but didn't think the writing was nearly as strong as in my top picks.

message 16: by Robyn (new)

Robyn (robyn_bravi) My prediction:
Winner: Salt to the Sea or Burn Baby Burn

Honor: The Female of the Species, We Are the Ants, Highly Illogical Behavior, Still Life with Tornado

message 17: by Kathy (new)

Kathy Meulen Ellison | 0 comments Wait wait... just read Highly Illogical... I could see it being honor book worthy.

message 18: by Mary HD (last edited Jan 20, 2017 12:03PM) (new)

Mary HD (marymaclan) | 87 comments Winner:
The Lie Tree or The Female of the Species

Honor:
The Sun is Also a Star
We are the Ants

(Did not get to The Passion of Dolossa or Railhead)

Personal favorites: (Last year's) Six of Crows and this year's sequel Crooked Kingdom; Learning to Swear in America

Sorry that the 4th book in the excellent Raven Boys series, which concluded this year, does not appear to be on anyone's award radar. Wish there were a literary prize for series books!

message 19: by Lisa C (new)

Lisa C | 6 comments My winner:
The Lie Tree

Honors:
March Book 3
We are the Ants
Scythe

Three personal favorites that aren't on award radar: Railhead, Crooked Kingdom, and Raven King.

message 20: by elissa (last edited Jan 16, 2017 10:26AM) (new)

elissa (librarianbodyworkerelissa) | 53 comments My Winner Prediction (which actually is one of my favorites of the year):
Passion of Dolssa

Honors (and I like these 2 a lot, too):
Burn Baby Burn
Still Life with Tornado

[Personal favorites that won't win anything:
Half Lost, Games Wizards Play (I agree about wishing for awards for series books...); Thanks for the Trouble, Outrun the Moon, Serpent King, Memory of Light, Girl in the Blue Coat, Devil & the Bluebird, Steep & Thorny Way]

message 21: by Amanda (last edited Jan 17, 2017 07:04AM) (new)

Amanda (lulu9700) | 19 comments My Winner: We Are the Ants

Honors:
Female of the Species
March, Book Three

Books I would be happy to see win but think they are long shots: Exit, Pursued by a Bear, Bitter Side of Sweet, Burn Baby Burn and Still Life With Tornado.

Books I didn't like and everyone else did so they will probably win: Passion of Dolssa (I didn't dislike this one, but it is a straight up adult book. Nothing YA about it, and it was 150 pages too long) The Lie Tree and The Sun is Also a Star

message 22: by Maureen (new)

Maureen (mhsquier) | 79 comments Winner - The Passion of Dolssa

Honors -
March, Book 3 (really hoping here)
Wolf Hollow
