This is the discussion thread for A Wrinkle in Time. This month I'd like to try something different. So I'd like everyone to tell me 3 things in this discussion, please.
1) What was your favorite part? Why?
2) Who was your favorite character? Why?
3) What is your overall opinion of this book?

Heather (thebooknerdmom) Minor spoilers!

My favorite part in this book was when Meg saved Charles Wallace on her own. Up until that point it was centered around the males and she was looking to them to save her father. Meg would look to Charles to have the answer since he had the gift, or Calvin to save Charles from being under the IT’s influence. Even after they found her father and barely escaped the IT’s clutches and were tesseracted to another planet, she was looking to Calvin and her father—it was their fault that Charles was left behind. When she when back to face the IT herself and to save Charles, finally realizing that she had the power at her disposal all along to overcome the IT, I was like thank you Meg! That was probably my favorite part because she stopped looking to others to fix things and did it for herself. Self-empowerment.

I guess I’d have to say Meg was my favorite character, even though she bugged me during some of the story. I liked that her character was just an average “plain jane” character with braces and glasses, and she didn’t have the gift that Charles Wallace had. I think that sends a good message to young readers that everyday people—especially girls—can be the heroes. The other characters were okay—but bothered me in some way. Charles Wallace seemed too arrogant because he did have a gift and he spoke too advanced for his age. Calvin just randomly appeared and then it appeared like he was taking a boyfriend-ish role toward Meg when they barely acknowledged each other before.

Overall I thought the book was okay. There were parts that I wasn’t able to enjoy as much reading it now in my mid-late 20s. Some parts of the plot were ignored or they kind of just forgot about it, and other things I had to ignore.

I’ll probably read the other books in this series just to see what happens. I am definitely going to check out the movie—love that Reese Witherspoon is playing Mrs. Whatsit, she’s one of my favorite actresses!
