Some books I recently finished and enjoyed reading are 'The Book Thief' by Markus Zusak, 'Wild (From Lost to Found' by Cheryl Strayed, and 'Still Alice' by Lisa GenovaI am currently reading 'Wave'. Sonali Deraniyagala's memoir of the 2004 tsunami in the Indian Ocean is heartbreakingly sad.
I am currently reading 'The Goldfinch' by Donna Tartt, but I am thinking of putting it aside for something a little lighter.

I loved The Book Thief. I would recommend it to anyone!

Tricia -- I loved The Secret History. I actually read it right when it came out, when I was in college. I haven't read The Goldfinch yet, but it's on my to read list.

I'm reading the last book in The Pledge trilogy, The Offering. I LOVE dystopian, fantasy novels. I read The Goldfinch and I'm still on the fence. I didn't hate it but it took me like 2 months to read it. Ask anyone, it usually takes me a day or two to read one book. Even a 700 page book. Anyway, Abundance of Katherines by John Green (my personal hero) is next.
I just finished Orphan Train. I enjoyed the book. I enjoy historical fiction. For some reason I was not aware of the orphan trains in 1929. The book does a good job of explaining what the character Vivian endured during the Orphan Train movement. It is an important story of that time period.

My great-grandmother used to talk about the orphan train coming through town. I've been meaning to read the book -- so glad to know that it is good! Thanks for sharing

One of my favorite series (and the latest installment will come out this summer) is Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series. They are historical fiction but also have time travel involved. They are very detailed and she researches them for a long time (I actually emailed her to ask when her newest one would be completed). I also really loved Pillars of the Earth (really anything by Ken Follett) and Barbara Kingsolver's The Poisonwood Bible.

My book club is reading The Orphan Train. Will discuss it this Thursday - Sad to think this really happened.
I just started The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry -- a quirky little novel that was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2012. Enjoying it so far!
I really enjoyed reading Orphan Train. Not long ago, there was a great PBS American Experience program on the Orphan Trains.
I'm almost finished with the third installment in the Game of Thrones series. It's got all the unfiltered nastiness of the middle ages and an author who just doesn't care who your momma is! But the characters, relationships and plot twists are so juicy it's hard to put down!
I'm reading The Matchmaker by Elin Hilderbrand. I don't typically read romance, and I guess this book is an example of why I don't. It's unbelievably sad! I like to finish, so I'll stick it out, but I'm ready to put Orphan Train on my list. I love historical fiction!
Read Gone Girl - a must read! Defending Jacob - another good one; Into the Free and When Mountains Move - need to be read Into first and Mountains is the sequel - both by South LA young woman who graduated from Walker High.
