I have just finished heartless and it's a wonderful book but I would highly recommend reading Alice's adventures in wonderland and more importantly Alice through the looking glass before you read heartless as there are lots of subtle references you will miss that add so much colour to the story if you are not familiar with Carroll's world.
I agree with you Fiona! I've read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass multiple times. And upon suggesting Heartless I have since picked it up. I'm about halfway through right now and have to say you should read both first but don't have to. Like any retelling it's good to know the origin story first.
