Book Riot's Read Harder Challenge discussion

I'm not sure what to do for this. I live in Greece but I'm American and my Greek is not good enough to read Greek books. The only books that have been banned or challenged here are in Greek. Thoughts from the group about this? Thanks!

Wikipedia tells me *Lysistrata,* which there are several English translations of, was banned in Greece in 1967. So...if you're in the mood for a classical-period play, maybe you can do that?

I'm not sure I understand your issue. The books can be banned in America. I guess it depends on your interpretation of "in your country". I'd bet that it could be interpreted to mean your country of origin.

Ya, I googled that but found either out-of-print books or books in Greek, which I cannot read. However, someone above recommended an Ancient Greek play so that is what I'm going to read. Thanks!

For this I plan on reading The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time since it has been on my TBR for a while now.

I am considering Naked Lunch or The Pentagon Papers, but will probably go with Tropic of Cancer, by Henry Miller. It was banned in the United States for thirty years.

I'm reading Unwind and A Good Man Is Hard to Find. I have 2 banned/challenged tasks this year.

I read The Great Gatsby as it's been challenged often.

I found a few in Denmark. Fanny Hill was banned until 1965. Two danish biographies has been challenged by the military because they feared that they would reveal military secrets and endanger the state. And finally the book I have chosen, Katamaranen by Bent Haller, was removed from the school libraries in a part of Denmark called Thy, because a group of kids in the book set a school on fire and the school boards feared that it would incite similar episodes. I think that is quite funny and I adore Bent Haller, but haven't read Katamaranen, so I choose that one.

This is an obvious one, but I'm fiiinally going to read the Catcher in the Rye. Yeah. I know.

Given that this one is on both Better World and Book Riot, I'll probably be finally conquering The Complete Maus.

I am originally from Philippines but currently living in Dubai, UAE. Help please.

The UAE is easy, they ban lots of things. Books about the Holocaust (anything by Elie Wiesel will do I think), anything considered anti-Islam (Satanic Verses will do it.), or anything with graphic sex (50 Shades?)

So many to choose from, but I finally decided to go with Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species. Not exactly a page turner, but one well worth reading.

I read In the Spirit of Crazy Horse, which fits in the spirit of the task but maybe not the exact intent. When the hardback was published, a former governor of South Dakota (because the book accused him of rape) and an FBI agent (because the book accuses him of falsifying evidence etc) took the author and publisher to court and the paperback and foreign editions were on hold for ten years. It deals with clashes between the FBI and Native Americans, which seems timely to me in terms of understanding more of the background to the present protests.
