Melania Linderman | 1 comments In every one of its chapters, The Phantom Tollbooth displays a level of brilliance rarely seen in the genre of fantasy as it describes the adventures that a seemingly average boy named Milo and his new friend, a dog named Tock, experience.
In the Lands Beyond, the world that he reaches in a mysterious tollbooth, Milo encounters many creatures, people and situations that leave him with a greater understanding of the world around him. As Milo becomes bewildered in the city of words, bamboozled in the kingdom of numbers and learns the musical notes behind the colors of sunrise, readers are swept along in the exciting plot and are pleasantly surprised at every turn.
Although the book may seem on the surface a book for young children, there are many interesting lessons to be learned for all age groups that read it. The emphasis in the book on looking at things from a different perspective is only one of many significant themes throughout the novel that can have a great impact on a person’s worldview.
Norton Juster’s The Phantom Tollbooth is an amazing and enlightening book to read as a teenager, whether it be as a book intended to expand your literary horizons or as a reading workshop choice book.
