Abigail Bok (regency_reader) These are old (1970s, I think), but they match all your categories: Elizabeth Peters, Street of the Five Moons, The Night of Four Hundred Rabbits, Borrower of the Night, Silhouette in Scarlet, The Seventh Sinner, and a few more I can’t think of right now.

Also old but quirky, light on romance until the last few but lots of suspense, would be Dorothy Gilman’s Mrs. Pollifax series: the first one is The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax. An older heroine.

Rachel Carter | 1 comments Lucretia: or The Heiress and the Dandy Lucretia or The Heiress and the Dandy by Rachel Carter

If you're looking for a clean romance novel, I'd like to let you know about my recently published book: Lucretia, which is a traditional Regency romance.
I have been delighted to receive some fantastic reviews, for example this from the Regency Reader website:
'I highly recommend this for lovers of the traditional Regency needing something a bit different but with all the familiarity of the genre. I think Rachel Carter is an upcoming talent, and worthy of taking note.'

Lucretia is available on kindle, in paperback and is also on kindle unlimited. Here's the blurb to whet your appetite. I hope some of you read and enjoy it.

Lucretia:
Kidnappings, elopements, duels, dastardly plots. Making your debut has never been so hazardous.

Hidden away from polite society, Lucretia Lanyon spent her time daydreaming of dandies, extravagant pantaloons and intricate neckties. Now an heiress and suddenly the toast of Society, she finds her ideal man in Viscount Prendergast, the one bachelor in London who doesn’t seem interested in marrying her. Lucretia must navigate around nefarious impostors, jealous mistresses, dastardly fortune hunters, and the match-making schemes of her aunt, while she tries to attract the notice of her beau.

Christopher Prendergast, an aspiring dandy, was busy perfecting the art of tying his cravat, learning how to use his quizzing glass as a social weapon, and secretly excelling at Jackson’s boxing saloon. To everyone’s surprise, Christopher finds himself in love for the first time in his life. He must now learn how to secure a lady’s affections. He stumbles through a wooing campaign that includes bizarre gifts, terrible poetry, daring rescues and, finally, honesty.

Lucretia is a traditional regency romance brimming with period detail, unlikely heroes, delicious villains, and the flourishing of an unlikely love.

D.V. Stone | 5 comments Hi

My book is clean. It is not a Christian novel, but many of my friends from church have read it and enjoyed the story.

Felice, Shield-Mates of Dar, is a Fantasy/Romance. Shifters from the Kingdom of Dar, mix with the humans of Argatha, in a tale of war, treachery, and love.

There is a rape (Not detailed) that reveals the life altering after effects on woman. The story unfolds to show that the troubles in our life, are not a mold of iron, but rather malleable clay, which we can use to shape a better future.

During the romance I lead the reader to the bedroom door, but close it.

Felice: Shield-Mates of Dar is available on Kindle unlimited.

Eleanor Smythson | 6 comments I've recently uploaded the latest in my series of short, clean Regency romances, 'A Lesson In Love'. In my last story, 'Beneath Him' Miss Hayward behaves rather badly, so I thought it would be fun if she became a reformed character. Well, she's trying hard but she's not completely sure how to go about it and no sooner has she made the decision than she meets a man who challenges everything she thinks she knows about being a better person.

message 12: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) Somebody in this group recently recommended a book by Kristan Higgins, Just One of the Guys. I want to second that recommendation! It’s a very contemporary romance and there are quite a lot of references to characters having sex, but the sex is not explicitly described. The writing is witty and sharp and often over-the-top, but the romance is deep and full of strong emotion. Plus the heroine is part of a wonderful family and there’s an adorable dog! What more could you ask for?

message 13: by C. (new)

C. | 289 comments Re: Abigail, wow thank you for that heads up that "there are quite a lot of references to characters having sex"! Even if the sex is not explicitly described, in the Kristan Higgins book~ Just One Of The Guys, that still sounds "trashy" with immoral people and far from being a "clean romance"!

message 14: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) Well, I don’t know about immoral—the heroine is in her early thirties, so it’s not like teenage sex is being portrayed or anything. That said, she is a more “full-blooded” character than I usually enjoy, but I found myself enjoying her company and sympathizing with her a lot.

message 15: by mary (new)

mary Ethington (xmorley) | 4 comments I was not impressed with kristan Higgins' book! I just tried reading "My One and Only" and didn't get out of the first chapter. I read something by the author where she said she was a clean writer. That is most definitely not the case. The main character referred to body parts so openly and in such a crude way that she came across trashy (or even slutty) and not at all likeable. I wish I had seen this review thread earlier. :) thanks though because I know for sure it wasn't just this book that isn't clean.

I published my book "LOVE IS WAITING" in January. It's a clean and wholesome romance with a touch of mystery. I'm a new writer hoping to get people to see my work. Please check out "LOVE IS WAITING" here is the link.

Love Is Waiting by J B Darroch

goodreads.com/book/show/38109073-love...

Longing to be wanted. A desire to be loved. A young girl with no hope of a future, left only with a dream of what was to come. A dream that would take Rebecca into a world with a promise of love and danger looming ahead. Rebecca dreams of the man she would meet, tall and handsome with black hair. Her dreams speak to her about a future love that she feels she cannot have. Alone and desperate, she sees the man in her dreams at her door waiting for her. His name is Duncan Carmichael and she knows at once this is the man she has been waiting for. Her dreams told her so. He tells her she has an inheritance waiting in Scotland. When she arrives to collect the inheritance, she meets Aiden Burns and he sets her heart a flutter. Confused about who she loves, she soon learns Duncan is not the man she had thought. He is mysterious and dangerous leaving her with a decision to make. Was her dreams telling her Duncan was the love she was waiting for? Or, did she meet Aiden for a reason?

QNPoohBear | 63 comments Kristan Higgins' early books are clean in the sense that the sex happens off page. I read a few and enjoyed the dogs and the heartwarming stories but then she started to get too graphic and her characters tossed off the most appealing language, which for some reason, is supposed to be better if it's British slang?! I gave up, despite the cute dogs.

Catch of the DayAll I Ever Wanted and Just One of the Guys were really good. Too Good to Be True was not as good, in my opinion. Not as clean or as charming are My One and Only and Until There Was You. The characters are all consenting adults and the genre is contemporary romance/women's fiction (chick lit).

message 21: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) I read Just One of the Guys and enjoyed it a lot! But got a bit savaged in this group for recommending it, on account of the offstage sex.

I prefer contemporary or American Frontier/historical.

message 29: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) I adore Angela Thirkell and enjoy D. E. Stevenson, but my sense of this group is that it tends toward contemporary. Not exclusively, though!

message 30: by D.R. (new)

D.R. Grady (goodreadscomdrgradybooks) | 7 comments Betty Neels books are probably the epitome of clean, sweet reads. She wrote a lot of stories for Harlequin after she retired from nursing.
I can also recommend Heather Horrocks, Susan Hatler, Bree Livingston, and Shannon Guymon. The latter four are recent finds of mine I've been enjoying!

message 31: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) If you want to go into the way back machine, I enjoyed the romances of Emilie Loring. She wrote more or less a book a year from the late 1920s to the early 1970s, and each one is a little time capsule of the manners, mores, and fashions of young Americans in that year. Very romantic with an emphasis on good values.

message 33: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) I just read a lovely contemporary romance called The Garden of Small Beginnings. There are a couple of hot kisses but otherwise clean, despite some not-explicit talk about sexual relationships. It centers on a mother in her thirties with two young girls whose husband died a few years earlier in a car crash, and it's very funny as well as tender and sad. I adored it!

AnneMarie Dapp | 2 comments Autumn Lady

Thank you for adding me to your group! I'm a historical romance author specializing in the Victorian era. My latest novel, Autumn Lady, takes place in 1870 San Francisco. Here is a synopsis of the novel. Happy reading!

Best,
AnneMarie Dapp

Mara McClain is a young Irish immigrant looking to begin anew in Victorian-era San Francisco, after the California Gold Rush. She struggles for both love and independence, as a budding businesswoman in a male-dominated society.

Set amid the fascinating backdrop of San Francisco’s Golden Age, Autumn Lady draws from an eclectic cast of characters, both historical and original. It’s an idiosyncratic journey through the highs and lows, ballrooms and back rooms, alleys and the promenades, and the enchantment and viciousness, of an American city on the brink of a new era.

Autumn Lady is not just the story of Mara McClain, it is the story of both a woman and a city coming of age in one of America’s most exciting historical periods.
