Beth (k9odyssey) Marjorie is already a fan of Josephine Tey and has volunteered to be the discussion leader. Look for more topics as we begin to read The Man In the Queue.

Valerie Brown I just started this book yesterday. I think I am about 30% through, and am enjoying it so far.

Whitney (helloooooo) Hi group! I am just starting the book. By coincidence I already own a copy of this book, borrowed from my grandmother's library, who has been a longtime reader of mysteries. The paperback copy I have might be around 50 years old. And I noticed the book's original publication date was 1929. So I'm starting in cautiously, hoping that it won't be full of derogatory statements about different groups of people from different countries and genders... I already came across Inspector Grant thinking about how women "always" do things such and such a way, and I'm thinking "oh DO we?" :-)

Be forewarned it does have some expressions and statements that we wouldn't find politically correct today. However, it is a product of it's time and I was able to get past that part of it.

Whitney (helloooooo) (Sigh). Yeah. I had to look up what "Levantine" means. Wikepedia says that "Levant" is an approximate geographic area that covers the eastern Mediterranean area . . . Syria Turkey Cyprus Israel Lebanon Palestine . . . Good to know.

Natalie Tyler (doulton) I got the book late and so am only about 100 pages in. I was really startled that Grant leapt to the conclusion that the criminal was from the Levant---with no information at all. It's tantamount to saying, if your house is robbed and you have no evidence at all, that it must have been somebody from Norway who did it.
????????
But I know it's a product of its time. "The Levant" comes up in some Agatha Christie books, too.
