Superheroes and Comic Book Club discussion

Does anyone have any nominations for the first two books of the month for the year? (One for January - February, one for March - April.)

These should be prose novels, or prose non-fiction books relating to comic books or superheroes.

(1) Worm - maybe even as a side project for the year because it is so long. It's fantastic. It's free, and web serial format makes for very easy use on ereader or browser. This is by far my favorite story in the supers genre. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

(3) Action Figures #1: Secret Origins - These are fun and more a YA target. Excellent series. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

(4) Super Powereds #1 - Another web serial, this one went from serial to independent publication. It starts a little slow but gets great by the end, and books 2 and 3 are each better than the previous. (5) Dynamistress book 1 - Independent publication and unique voice to the genre, its more an autobiography that happens to be a supers story than a supers story. Very nicely done. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

Has this group covered "The Regional Office Is Under Attack!"? That'd be my nominee. Also PG-13-ish in nature. Violent but not gratuitous, adult situations but no sex. Heavy on satire and fun.

i suggest Prepare To Die by Paul Tobin. Very good first novel by a comic book professional. Would love to get everyone's opinions about this novel.

I'm new(ish) to the group and was curious about the group read as well. Is that still an "active" thing? Not trying to push people away from this group but I am also a member of the "I Read Comic Books" groups which is pretty active. Just FYI...

I'm holding out hope that the group will give Worm by Wildbow a shot. It is one of the best things I have read in any genre, starts out a little rough but is also the first thing the author ever wrote.

Sorry I've been AWOL! It's been a crazy year! And it has a lot to do with this group in a roundabout way - but I'll explain later. For now, I think we should vote on some books to read for book of the month! I'll set up a poll right here based on the books everyone has suggested. I think we have enough that we'll take the first choice for the next one, and the second place book for the following book of the month.

And I'll set up a folder for Worm - since it's so long, I like Allan's idea of reading it over the period of a year.

Hi, Ryan - thanks for the question and concern! As you can see here, we are starting our group reads back up. I've started the poll and am about to link to it here, below. The group was originally started to tackle non-comic-book or non-graphic-novel fare. There are so many groups for those, and I thought it would be interesting to read prose novels, adaptation, and non-fiction books about comics and superheroes.

Of course, please feel free to discuss comics in other areas of this group - they are definitely not off topic! (As well as other media, and anything else related to comics and superheroes.)

Natalie - another mod in the group - started a group read for actual comic books and graphic novels, but she's had to bow out due to being busy. I don't have the time to dedicate to that (especially since so many other groups do it), but am not opposed to it if anyone wants to. While I started this as primarily a book club for comics and superheroes, anything comics and superheroes can (and should) be discussed - including comic books, tv, movies, games, and anything else.

DF - thanks for the suggestion! However, we ask that authors not nominate their own book for book of the month. I'm sorry I didn't mention that in the first post in this discussion above, but it's something we've been practicing for quite a while. Please feel free to discuss you book in the Author's Corner section of this group.

And we usually dedicate one book of the month each year to members wanting to share the books they've authored - so keep your eye out for that.

These sound great, Will! And yes, whenever we do non-fiction, these types of books are definitely good picks. Since we had 3 prose fiction books and these 3 non-fiction books, I figured we'd do the 3 fiction books first, and then follow it up with the non-fiction. So I'm starting a poll for the next non-fiction book we'll read, which will follow the novel.

Here's the poll for the next Book of the Month! (I'm thinking maybe we'll do May - June; by the time the poll is over, and everyone has time to get their book, April will be about over.)

I just started a new superhero universe with my first book, Hitbox #1. They're serialized taking inspiration from comics but with a prose story. If anyone's interested, they're set in an alternate world where a highly controversial new president, running on an anti-immigrant platform (okay, maybe not THAT alternate) has been elected and passed an act legalizing vigilantism. The first story features Zach Thomas, a billionaire who has spent the last 5 years hiding in a studio apartment almost never coming out. The vigilante act inspires him to go back into the world. I'm releasing a book weekly and they're all free with Kindle Unlimited or .99 each otherwise.
