Some of the greatest authors of the past decades have formulated masterpieces by taking a long journey. I’ve decided to travel to Beijing by train to visit and talk with students from one of the prestigious universities in China. As the montivagant train whizzed through the towns revealed by the mowburnt hillsides and boscaresque cities, my thoughts began to drift to the olden days of cinematography. The frames captured a glimpse into the everyday life of the people. The old buildings and streets tell a story of a time forgotten, and history carved its mark on the Foucault civilizations of its time.

But I soon realized I'd attracted the xenophiles. The gaze of inquest branded their faces. A stranger from foreign lands in their midst. They inched closer. Their eyes ogled. And suddenly an outburst from the crowd managed to penetrate the sensory perceptions followed by a warm but peculiar smile. I turned from the transparent window to give my attention.

The first wave of questioning. “Where are you from?” followed by, “Why did you come to China?” I gave pause to their questions. I thought in these modern times. In this new era, some people still refuse to believe that the world had spun into a new time. Cling to traditions giving no thought to modernisms.

First, I replied, "I’m American.” The sounds of 美国 echoed throughout the gathered crowd. I visited my mind a second time and continued, “You asked why I’m in China? This question leaves me to think you believe China is less desirable than any other country in the world. Are you saying to visit China is not a universal preference among foreigners?

My reply caused an awkward silence; I continued, “Gentlemen, Do you believe if you embrace the changes in the world you would somehow lose yourself in the process? Your nation existed for over five thousand years. And this did not occur just by chance. Embrace the times we live my friends but don’t forget your past.

One man blurts out, “When would America attack China?” I paused at the question. I replied, “It’s not economically sound for America to attack China they are too poor to fight!” The crowd began to laugh. Another man shouted, “What do you think of Chinese Philosophy?” I give pause to the questions. I replied, “If It speaks of hate run from it, but if it speaks of unity embrace it. How congenial would it be to understand the cultures of your friends or foes? Literature is a powerful tool. Think of the gaps that would be a bridge if nations understood nations.

A voice yelled out, “You are 非洲 you are 黑种人 I give pause to the outburst. I replied, Send me to Africa, and the Africans will gaze at me and say, “No! This man is not African.” Send me to India, and they will say, “No! This man is not Indian. Send me to South American, and they too will say this man is not South American. But when I speak they all will say this man is American. I hold not these follies against you because some Americans are guilty of the same. They can not tell the difference between a Chinese and Japanese or a Korean from Vietnamese, So they refer to the people in this region as Asians. Political Correctness. One man blurts out, “Your Chinese is excellent. You are Chinese!” I replied, “So is your English!” They all started to laugh and we 干杯.
