What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

The way this book begins is.....a guy as a boy is sent to the English countryside in World War One or two. A plane is coming down and going to hit the house he was living in. To escape he dives down into the masoulium, and there he is transported to the in chanted woods. He comes through a tree and ties a scarf to the tree so he can find it again. Rumpelstiltskin makes all the trees have scarves. Then he's on a quest to find his way home. He has to talk to the king who turns out to be his brother who disappeared a long time ago. It was all a plot by rumpelstiltskin. That's the description my husband gave me....it sounded good, but he didn't know the title. Does anyone know it?

The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly?

It's not really Rumpilstiltskin at all, but the rest of that is a dead ringer for The Book of Lost Things, I think Kris is right.
