Upper Elementary Book Review discussion

This story is about Esperanza Ortega, who is growing up well-off in a post-revolutionary Mexico. However, her father and some of his men are killed, her financial situation drastically changes and her family is forced to move to the United States during the Great Depression. Esperanza must learn how to hold on to her rich history and rise above her current circumstances. This book has fabulous language and tells a great story. It shares the plight of Mexican migrant workers in America as well as the hardships of the Great Depression. Strong readers will also be able to appreciate the language. Also a great read aloud.
