All About Books discussion

Borough Press are doing a social media campaign where they are asking people to post a book a day in the month of June. They have 30 different questions and are asking people to pick one book for each question. I've had a look through them all and most are quite different to the Reading Journey questions do there shouldn't be too much overlap

Each day I'll post the question in this thread. Feel free to contribute with pictures and thoughts.

My favorite childhood book is Little House in the Big Woods

Plus Little Women, the Narnia Books and Harriet the Spy.

Awesome Beth! I read Little Women last year and read Little Men this year and they were both pretty good. I hope to read Jo's Boys if I have time this Summer or save it for the Fall.

What is your favourite childhood book?

I think it was the first book that really got me reading by myself for pleasure, you know without having a grown-up read it to you. Anyways it was Vicky Angel by Jacqueline Wilson.

My favourite childhood book was the magic faraway tree I loved Moonface and Saucepan man!

and this is my childhood copy (it's seen the inside of 11 different apartments so far;)

Mine was A Little Princess. Read it over and over.

I loved a series of detective books...similar to the Hardy Boys but it had a Christian bent to it. It was early 1960s but I cannot remember the name of the series. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

I was a Nancy Drew fiend, but for the emotional impact I would have to choose Little Women. (Great idea, Heather!)

The title has just come to me of my favourite childhood book. Here it is The Young Detectives

I can't remember the title of my favorite book (I borrowed it at the library) but it was very long and it talked about an American Indian boy and his adventures.
How I would like to remember the title and buy it!

I think my favourite book from childhood was Swallowdale and all of that series Swallows and Amazons. I still have them all

Pink, mine is the same! The Magic Faraway Tree! It's a very hard choice though as I loved different books throughout childhood

Probably Little Women, even if now I don't consider it properly a children's book

My childhood fave was the magic faraway tree by Enid Blyton. My sister and I used to run around with Mum's saucepans on our heads.

The Comics = Specially the Phantom.

I liked anything by Willard Price. The adventure stories were about two boys and wild animals. My fav was probably The Elephant Adventure

I did have a book version of the A A Milne poem Forgiven about a boy Alexander and his beetle. But I can't find it here on Goodreads.

Mine is a copy of A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth for £2.99. It's 1500 page so a pretty good price per page!

I can't remember a specific favorite book but I devoured the Famous Five series by Enid Blyton, then read all of her Adventure series.


Best Bargain
Show us a book which you got a great deal on. Where did you get it from?

I got the CD version of Heartsick for $3 from Chapters.Indigo a few years back. It was marvelous (a bit gruesome in spots) and I read four of the series so far.
Recently, I found a copy of The Third Reich by Roberto Bolano for $1. I read his book, 2666, and am looking forward to reading more by him.

Is it possible it was by Ernest Thompson Seton? He wrote children's books with a strong American Indian presence.

If you mean only physical (aka dead tree) books, I used to haunt second hand bookshops in Philadelphia and later New York and picked up numerous bargains, but perhaps my best bargain was the 3 volume (hardback) edition of the complete poetry of Cowper, which I picked up off the sale table of the Strand Bookstore for 10 cents a volume.

I second Everyman on this: after much inner resistance to buy an e-reader, I still sometimes sing from the treetops when realizing something that I would like to read and can't get hold off in a library and don't want to buy is available on Gutenberg.

I managed to pick up Romanticism: An Anthology (like 1200 pages of poetry) for 75p at a local charity shop. Considering they're often £20-£30 new, I was chuffed (although I believe I have an earlier edition).

I also get most of my bargains for free or on kindle but I decided to pick my best non electronic book bargain

Best bargain.

Apart from free library and ebooks, my best book bargain has probably been my Penguin Great Loves boxset which I picked up from The Book People for under £10, which for 20 books was a whopping saving of over £100.

Pink, I completely agree with The Book People! Amazing bargains! I also have the Great Loves boxset :)

Got my dearly beloved 16-book Dickens collection for £17. All Vintage Classics. Amazing value.

Being a member at Audible means you often get deals where you can buy three books for the price of two. That means one is free. I have certainly many books that I have enjoyed, procured in this manner. In addition you can for most books return them if you dislike them even when you have listened to the whole darn thing. I think that is pretty amazing. Don't think I am employed by them. I am not!!!! I just so happy they exist.

Thanks a lot, I've looked in his books but I couldn't find it. The title is something like "The Little Indian" and it had a white and blu hardcover; it was a small book but it had around 500 pages. The problem is also that I don't know the author, in which language it was written and if it was a translated book. I had read it in German and perhaps it was by a German author and it has never been translated in other languages. I really can't remember :(

book bargain

I buy a lot in the secondhand bookshop and there I find books for 1 or 2 euro but most of the time I pay only a few cents for them (the longer they stay in the bookshop the lesser they cost).


edit: I'm looking for that book and I think (googleing a lot) that it could be a book by Karl May about Winnetou. I don't know if he is worldwide famous.

I think audible is a great site, I've been practically paying £7.99 for a Stephen King book worth £20. This is because I'm paying for membership.

Best bargain? Probably a complete Shakespeare I got from a church jumble sale for 1/6 (one shilling and sixpence or 7 and a half p) when I was about 13. A lovely soft covered leather-bound, gold-tooled and edged book, published by "The Literary Press, London" (no date). Not brilliant condition, so probably not a "collectors" work, but lovely to have, for the nostalgia value too.

Best recent Bargain? - Oh all those wonderful classics you can get free on Kindle!! That has to be the ultimate bargain :)

The best bargain I got on a book was when I got kingdom keepers 7. It was $18.00 dollars us but after a 15% off one item and a couple of barnes and noble giftcards I got the book for $1.69 . It was a great deal! :-)

Apart from all the classic freebies on kindle, I've picked up loads of books for 99p on kindle when they were on offer, too many to list here! In fact, I'm getting quite stingy now, I don't like to pay more than a pound for a book!

I think A History of Reading: I found it on line - I think through amazon, but by a private seller - and even if the prize says 12.99 I got it for 1 plus shipping fares....

My best Bargain in the recent times was the Free Download of Torquato Tasso's Gerusalemme liberata and his play Aminta.

The book I bought for best bargain in that sense is The Unknown Sigrid Undset: Jenny and Other Works. I was lucky to chance upon it and it was very cheap. But I am still waiting its arrival (Probably in this week).

I think perhaps The Phantom Tollbooth,   . Jenny's book has been in 11 apartments; my copy of this book has been in 8 homes (apartments, houses, condos)...

June 2: Best Bargain - Show us a book which you got a great deal on. Where did you get it from?

I will second Everyman's choice for ebooks/Kindle books. But before the days of ebooks, when I was living in Atlanta I used to regularly browse the used bookstore near my apartment & picked up many books in the 10 books for $1 bin! I got the first 3 books in Isaac Asimov's Foundation series that way as well as some Patricia Wentworth Miss Silver mysteries which were out of print at the time...

I'm enjoying reading all the different suggestions.

Slightly less taxing for the book today and just a chance to browse your shelves
