Fiction:
Susan Warner - sappy, sweet, sentimental 18th century literature. Old school methodism. This writer writes her characters very tenderly. One of my all time favorite authors. I savored every single one of her stories.
- The Wide, Wide World is her most famous book and the first one I read. My favorite quote from it: "The heart must be set right before the life is."
- The Hills of the Shatemuc is my second recommendation by this author for two reasons. One, I have a bit of a crush on the main character. Second, it has one of my all-time favorite quotes:
"You are better than I am," he said with one of very different meaning.
"If that be true today, Will, don't let it be true tomorrow."
Isabella Alden and Pansy When I read all of Susan Warner's books I searched for other authors like her. The first book I read was my favorite.
The Pocket Measure - just a beautifully written book. I know a lot of people would hate it. I love it.
Nonfiction:
The book I am currently reading is Diary of Cotton Mather, 1681-1724. I expected to find it stuffy and boring. BUT NO! It is amazing! 10% in and I am in love with this book. So full of stark, beautiful phrasing!
"I found my soul under strong distempers, and especially an idle frame of soul was a plague upon me." Yeah, I know, dude. I had a lazy day yesterday too and got irritated with myself for it.
While not specifically christian, one of the most fascinating books I have read on the existence of God or gods is a written debate between Domonic Saltarelli and Vox Day. Vox Day is, I believe, a christian. But he doesn't take a specific christian stance in this book, merely argues in the support of the existence of a deity of some form. The arguments are fresh and unique and brilliant, and I highly recommend it to anyone who might be interested.
