So my book came today, I started reading it tonight. So far some of the characters are a little frustrating to me. The District Commissioner and Steina are two characters that get on my nerves. I don't know what it is but already the Commissioner comes off to me as not a very fair man and a little underhanded ,but I could be wrong. I do like the younger sister she seems very sure of herself. There justice system in this area of Iceland seems a little strange I know it is a different time period but the way she is locked up and how they handle the prisoners in itself seems a little weird to me. The author has definitely drawn me in and made me want to keep reading to see what happened between the night of the 13th and 14th and also how the young assistant reverend is going to help her. I hope to read a little bit more tonight and finish up chapter 2 and catch up to at least chapter 5 or 6 tomorrow.
I read through Chapter 1 as well. I thought the names would trip me up when I first started, but I am just pronouncing them one way and running with it! haha. I love that there's a map and a guide to pronunciation (which I am kind of ignoring...I tried at first, but gave up).
I was really hesitant to begin reading, not knowing how the pacing would be. But I found myself drawn in pretty quickly. I was just a bit confused at first until it got going
I also think it will be interesting to see the difference in the sisters. I agree, Wendy, that the younger one seems to be the one to take charge. I wonder why that is and if we will find out.
I'm very eager to meet Agnes. I want to learn more about what happened and why she is now considered a murderer. I feel like there's much more to that story! We have seen a couple sections from her perspective where she's locked up. I am not sure if that's present or what things will be like when she's at the home with the family. I like how Hannah Kent is already making me question the justice of it all. I have doubts about Agnes' crime and compassion for her in regards to how she's being treated. Almost like I'm taking her side, but I don't yet know if she's guilty or not!
I definitely have more questions than answers at this point, but that's a good way to start a book I think. It makes me want to keep reading to find out more

I honestly wasn't sure I was going to get into this book, just because of the reading mood I've been in. I'm so happy I didn't let my doubts stop me from reading through the 1st chapter. I have so many unanswered questions and I can't wait to meet Agnes. Off to continue reading. xxx

I felt the same way! I was so skeptical that it was over-hyped and I wasn't going to get into the story! I was pleasantly surprised as well.
