This is a biggie! Goodreads is rolling out the long requested rereading feature! Here's the link to the announcement in the Feedback group:

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 1631 comments Yay! *does happy dance*

Perfect timing too because I was considering doing a reread this month. Don't think I'm going to bother going back and making changes to books I've reread in the past though.

Hallelujah!

message 4: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 1631 comments For books that I've used other editions to mark as my rereads though, I don't see the different dates that I read them. It just gives me the date I originally read it.

See the message below from Goodreads:

“We wanted to give you a heads up: we are planning a little bit of downtime tonight for some crucial back-end maintenance. We are hoping it will last a short amount of time — less than an hour — and it will take place at 9 p.m. Pacific time (or, as we all know it, Goodreads Standard Time).

Apologies for any inconvenience this causes! We are working hard to ensure that this outage stays short and that you're able to get back to using the site as soon as possible. Please let us know if you run into any issues as a result of this downtime.”

Another planned outage tonight. See below:

“Hi everyone! Just a quick heads up that we are planning a little bit of downtime tonight for some important back-end maintenance. It will start at 8 p.m. Pacific time aka Goodreads Standard Time, and we hope it will be short (less than an hour).

Our apologies for any inconvenience! We'll do our best to make it quick so that you can get back onto the site as soon as possible. As always, let us know if you run into any issues. ”

This message from Goodreads staff:

Similar to what we did here, we have temporarily disabled the ability to add new URLs in member profiles as a proactive measure against a tactic being used by a group of spammers. We aren't sure how long this will be disabled, but we wanted you all to be aware in case you attempt to edit your profile in the coming days. We'll post here (Goodreads Feedback Group) when this has been re-enabled.

If you haven’t noticed, there’s a GR bug that adds a second read when you use the progress update from the home page to change your book status from “currently reading” to “read.” You’ll need to fill in your read date, too as it’s not automatically doing so. Then you’ll need to delete the second line of information below the one you just completed. Even though the data fields are empty, it’s still showing it as two reads.

This has been going on for a few days so you should go to your My Books and review the books you’ve recently completed.

message 20: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 3296 comments Thanx Jonetta.

message 21: by ~ Giulia ~ (new)

~ Giulia ~ | 104 comments Yeah it's really annoying. There's a book I read at the end of march that just keeps saying read 2 times no matter how many times I edit my review and delete the second date :(

message 22: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melissasd) | 1610 comments Thank you, Jonetta. I hadn't noticed that. I had to fix my last 2 books.

message 23: by Sharmon (new)

Sharmon (tpgirl) | 273 comments Yes I have found it on my last four books, but today I just made sure when I changed from currently reading to read, I "X" out that section about the rereading before I hit save and it didn't happen. Just like Jonetta said above.

message 24: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 13002 comments Mod
They really need to post a notice in the My Books section, especially since it’s gone on so long.

message 25: by ~ Giulia ~ (new)

~ Giulia ~ | 104 comments Ugh! What did they do to the series page?! Sigh, why are they so fond of humongous pictures and wasted white space?

On May 15, GR rolled out a change to the series list page for comment to anyone who’s a member of the Goodreads Feedback group. The first iteration was awful and what you’re looking at is a slight improvement. The feedback has been all negative and here’s the link to the topic.

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

message 27: by ~ Giulia ~ (new)

~ Giulia ~ | 104 comments Wow, that first version...

They must've extended the change to every GR member, because I'm not in the group :( I suppose joining to give negative feedback will be useless at this point

message 28: by Jonetta (last edited Jun 05, 2018 05:30AM) (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 13002 comments Mod
I think it’s useless. I was the first to respond and have tracked the topic from the beginning. Not one positive comment out of ~700.

They implemented the most critical fixes but have ignored the others. Just about everyone complained about the size.

What’s perplexing is they changed a feature that everyone was happy with already. With the hundreds of changes that readers have requested and assigned a higher priority, most are perplexed as to why this was messed with in the first place. I would imagine that unifying the platforms for the mobile app and desktop views must have had some infrastructure benefit. I hope so because otherwise, this is a failure.

message 29: by ~ Giulia ~ (last edited Jun 05, 2018 08:03AM) (new)

~ Giulia ~ | 104 comments What's even more perplexing is that, according to feedback comments, it doesn't look good on mobile devices either. And it could be improved with just a few minor changes, like aligning the "BOOK 1" etc with the title instead of the cover. Or reducing the size of the "related" series so you don't have to strain your eyes to filter out all the big, colorful clutter to focus on the smaller, actually useful information.

message 30: by Anita (new)

Anita (anitanodiva) | 4131 comments I HATE IT!!! I want the old version back - NOW! My computer sometimes does strange things to pages so I shut it down and cleaned it - this awful page is still there. Make it go away, please.

message 31: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 13002 comments Mod
Thanks for sharing that with them. Hopefully they’ll reconsider but it doesn’t look good.

message 32: by Anita (new)

Anita (anitanodiva) | 4131 comments This new series page is just horrible. You have to take way to much time to get just the basic information that the old page gave you at a glance. In the face of such negative response, it's sad they are going to keep it.

It really annoys me that GR doesn't listen to users. I've answered so many of their surveys giving them low scores for not listening but it is a complete waste of time.

GR has an agenda and could care less about what the most active users actually think or want. Its days like these that I miss Shelfari the most :(

Goodreads has rolled out an all new android app. Follow this link for more details.

Goodreads New Android App

message 41: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Have they fixed the problem with "add book/author". Is it actually there? The semantics and appearance don't matter to me as much as usability.

I will use the app for things like checking for book titles while I'm in a bookstore or checking my messages, but I use the webpage on my home computer for all else.

My phone updated with the new app for android and it looked ok at first but then I noticed when I click on one of my notifications I had no idea what the group was for that specific notification. In our book discussion group each sub-topic is usually Questing A, Question B etc. This is the only thing the app says. It doesn't say what the original topic was! So I can't really use this as I use the app for when my internet is whacky and can use the 4G on my phone. So I update my currently reading and check my notifications quickly. I rarely use the app for responding because it isn't so easy with the app and now I can't use it for notifications either.

Barb I'm not sure if this is the right place for this, so if you want me to post it elsewhere, Jonetta, let me know.

For those of you, like me, who use FictFact to keep your series reading organized, you'll be saddened to learn that the site has closed. If you go to the site now, you'll see this:

We recently lost our primary source of income, Amazon Associate sales. Due to a minor error on our part, we unknowingly had in infraction of their terms. We tried to appeal after we corrected the issue, but was not successful and they terminated our account. Over the years, we have had donations from our wonderful supporters, but it is not enough to cover our operating costs. We are extremely sad to have to close down the site after almost 10 years. Thank you for all your support over the years!!

There is a link where you can download your book data as a .csv file until July 1. If anyone knows of a site that might work as a substitute for FictFact, please let me know!

That’s really sad news. I still use it but consider Goodreads my primary resource. Amazon should be ashamed.

message 47: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melissasd) | 1610 comments This makes me sad because sometimes FictFact had the next book in the series listed before I noticed it on Goodreads. The emails they sent out really helped with this.
