Faber is an important person in Farenheit 451 because he is one of the only people that understands books. Since in this society, books hide the true meaning of life with its lies and such. Faber also helps Montag thoughout the book. Montag originally wanted Faber to make a copy of the bible because he didn't want to give it back to Beatty. But later he wanted Faber to help him bring books back into society because without them life would be empty, but people feared books because they contain the real and true meaning of life, which to them is horrifying.
I always felt that Faber was deeply disappointed in himself. He had so many chances to make a change, to prevent this book-hating madness from happening, but he never dared to step up. He is the voice of all of us who are too afraid to do the right thing. By helping Montag, he felt like he was finally redeeming himself.

Faber was an important character who knew a lot about books and was one of the few people who had interest in the meaning of books. Montag wants Faber to teach him about what the books mean and with this help, maybe Montag can change peoples perspective on how they view the books and the world!

He was, I am currently at the part when he was first mentioned, it's just into part 2. When Mildred and Guy are sitting around reading the books. The first time he is mentioned is by name is when guy recalls talking to him in the park last year. It was mentioned earlier that he spoke to an old man in the park, but this is the first time we have a name for the man.

What does Montag want Faber to teach him?
