Daniel (pickyreader1) | 1925 comments My favourite reads of all time include- Gone by Michael Grant, The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, The Hunger Games, the Maze Runner, and The Chaos Walking series by Patrick Ness.
And if you haven't checked out David Estes's books yet, you should; they're all really good!

message 4: by kynndra-jo (new)

kynndra-jo (charlietanghoe) Daniel, whenever you get free time you should definitely check out Cirque Du Freak - I think you'd enjoy it - there quick reads as well. I'd dare say that it's up there with HP and PJ! But more mature.

message 5: by Divya (new)

Divya HP and PJ?!? I don't know about Daniel, but I'll definitely check it out, Kynndra! :D

Katy H (the_other_katy) | 49 comments What's the consensus here regarding "The Fault in Our Stars"? Is it worth reading?

message 7: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (pickyreader1) | 1925 comments Looks pretty interesting Kynndra- I'll have to read it sometime!

Oh I'd definitely rank it up there (for my personal tastes anyway!) - I found it to be an amazing series - absolutely loved it. You should definitely check it out!

I actually had to read this for my AP literature class. I thought it was great, but I wouldn't say I'm a hyped up fan of John Green's. It's certainly a good read (and a tear jerker!) I look forward to seeing the movie. I'd say give it a go, Katy!

It's very interesting. Yes, whenever you get the time give it a try c:

message 11: by Katy (last edited Jun 02, 2014 10:07AM) (new)

Katy H (the_other_katy) | 49 comments Thanks, Kynndra! I'm convinced =) I had to read Catch-22 for my A.P./dual credit/whatever Lit class. At least I got college credit for it! Also, I really like that book...darn! Now I feel old. LOL To be fair, I felt old before - mostly cause I AM old - for a Y.A. group at least (31), so no worries. ;) I'm not a huge John Green-aholic either. In fact, I found the concept of of An Abundance of Katherines offensive until it occurred me that there ARE an obnoxious number of girls named Katherine around. It annoys even me (especially since few people can remember how to spell my name. C'mon, it's 4 letters!) But I digress...Thanks for the recommendation/encouragement. =)

message 12: by kynndra-jo (last edited Jun 02, 2014 10:35AM) (new)

kynndra-jo (charlietanghoe) I can't say I've read that book; however I can understand the frustration of names and people misspelling or pronouncing them. Though.. I guess my name is a little different but c'mon it's not that hard to pronounce [KIN-DRAH] I've been called Kinandra, Kiyanna, Kiandra blah. Anywhoo. Yes, The Fault in Our Stars was a great read - I truly did enjoy the story for sure. I'm positive that if anything it'll be worth your time c; also! You are not old if you're young at heart - which from as far as I can tell you are!

I have to agree with Kynndra and recommend Cirque Du Freak. And it is lengthy, book wise(there's 12 of them) but they're fun, quick reads. I finished the series within 2 weeks without trying to hurry.

Most beautiful book I've read.

message 24: by kynndra-jo (new)

kynndra-jo (charlietanghoe) Exactly what Tommy said. Never once did I grow tired of Cirque Du Freak - 'twas a quick read that I honestly never wanted to end.

message 25: by Donna (new)

Donna (donanicole) | 897 comments Yes, would like to hear what people think of The Fault in Our Stars. I feel like I don't even want to see the movie. It's about the big C and the big D so not going there. But is the book worth the read?

Oddly enough, I came to the opposite conclusion on The Fault in Our Star, but for the same reason. Meaning I want to see the movie, but not so much read the book. I'd rather watch a sad movie and have it be over in a couple hours than invest multiple hours reading, and likely crying, in bed haha. It doesn't hurt that I also love Shailene Woodley.

Obviously, I haven't read it, but John Green's a genius. I can borderline guarantee it's beautifully/smartly written and thought provoking. That's just what the guy does.

message 27: by kynndra-jo (new)

kynndra-jo (charlietanghoe) It was a beautiful book with an amazingly heart breaking story. I for on, anticipate seeing the film even though I'll probably cry in the theaters lol.

message 28: by Nancy (last edited Jun 04, 2014 08:30AM) (new)

Nancy (paper_addict) My daughter bought the book (The Fault In Our Stars) and read it and then told me I needed to read it. It sat for about 6 months before I finally decided to read it.

I really liked the book. I had absolutely no idea what the book was even about. I didn't think the book was about the Big C. It was about two people who just happen to have/had cancer.

Half way through the book I texted her and ask her if I was going to cry at the end! She said 'yes, but not what you think.' I texted her back when I finished and told her she LIED. I did cry and it ended how I thought. LOL, I guess I am better at predicting the ending better than her!

You should definitely read the book. I'm glad I had no idea what it was about before I read it. Only because I didn't have any pre-existing notions of how the book would go.

message 29: by Red (new)

Red (littleredreader) Do any of you guys read any horror or scary books? I would love some recommendations. Preferably YA, but I'm open to adult books as well. I'm just really in the mood read something that will creep me out and give me the spooks.

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 10717 comments Mod
Hmm the most "horror" I really read is Dean Koontz's stuff (adult). I'd recommend pretty much anything by him, but especially his Frankenstein series, BRILLIANT!

In terms of YA, are you up for zombies? If so the entire Rot and Ruin (Benny Imura, #1) by Jonathan Maberry series is really good. Parts of the Gone (Gone, #1) by Michael Grant series border on horror/scary, and that series is awesome. Also Ashes (Ashes Trilogy, #1) by Ilsa J. Bick is a pretty intensely scary "YA" series (although felt more adult to me). Hope this helps!!

message 31: by Donna (last edited Jun 07, 2014 10:16AM) (new)

Donna (donanicole) | 897 comments I will second David's recommendations. Also any good zombie read. In the After (In the After #1) by Demitria Lunetta
This Plague of Days, Season 1 by Robert Chazz Chute anything by Charlie Higgson. If you like a young woman protagonist, a little romance with your zombies, I highly recommend Rachel Higgson's series Love and Decay, Episode One (Love and Decay #1) by Rachel Higginson , the first episode is free so try it out. Each episode is short but worth it. You can also buy groups of episodes, and it is on Season Two so lots to read already.

Yeah, oh please, I am sure I am the only one in this group with a dad who was at the Normandy Beaches on D-Day. He would never talk about it, which is very common of men from that war. I only have the letters he wrote to his parents while he was in Europe. I made a scrap book of them and the pics he had from then.

I've read the book and I saw the movie Friday evening. The movie is a good adaptation of the book. Some things were changed but I thought it worked. I was already familiar with Shailene Woodley's so I fully expected her to do well with the role, but I wasn't so sure about Ansel Elgort as Augustus as I had only seen him in the new Carrie movie as Tommy Ross. Remarkably, he was able to pull off a character that I expect would be difficult to make seem like a really real person. I think he's going to be one to watch right along with Shailene! My eyes were misty during the show and there was a lot of sniffling and nose blowing throughout the packed theater - even the guys in the audience (probably about 40%).

message 34: by kynndra-jo (new)

kynndra-jo (charlietanghoe) Exactly what Lauren said! Ansel Elgort was phenomenal is his role, as well as Shailene. It was a great adaptation (a few things were missing but in no way did it diminish the film).

Like David mentioned Rot and Ruin (Benny Imura, #1) by Jonathan Maberry is great, if you like zombies you should check it out.

If you like a little gothic with your YA horror, the entire The Monstrumologist (The Monstrumologist, #1) by Rick Yancey series is awesome!

The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters is a cool adult ghost story set in postwar Britain dealing with the downfall of an aristocratic family.

Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist is a refreshing take on the vampire story by Sweden's answer to Stephen King.

A Living Nightmare (Cirque Du Freak, #1) by Darren Shan The Cirque du Freak series is really creepy YA vampire series that you should definitely give a chance if you haven't already!

message 36: by Donna (new)

Donna (donanicole) | 897 comments Thanks for the report on Fault in Our Stars. Shailene is also dating Ansel in real life and he is also in Divergent with her. He plays her brother. I am convinced it is a good book and movie but not sure I want to cry over cancer and death no matter.

The Diviners (The Diviners, #1) by Libba Bray was one of the scarier creepy YA books I've read. Rot & Ruin is a good choice too. Also, if you like vampires (or even if you don't) Crusade (Crusade, #1) by Nancy Holder trilogy is very creepy, scary, gory the whole nine yards. Loved this trilogy! Really awesome characters as well. The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black was another one that was very brutal and freaky. I also recommend Anna Dressed in Blood (Anna, #1) by Kendare Blake Now THAT was a scary ghost story!
