I second "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings" - (I've been meaning to re-read and jumpstart re-reading and finishing her memoirs!)
I nominate Invisible Life by E. Lynn Harris - I think there is a huge blind spot when it comes to this conversation about reading more writers of color, and I think it's when it comes to contemporary fiction. We focus on the "literary" stuff!

I nominate A Stranger in Olondria by Sofia Samatar. It's a fantasy novel published last year which has gotten some wonderful reviews and was nominated for a couple of SFF awards.
Wow, E. Lynn Harris gets a lot of praise for his books. I second Invisible Life

I read it back in 2007, so it will be interesting to re-read it for JULY!
