I was hoping for a better outcome for Tess, so I hated the way it ended, but the writing was good and I appreciated what it had to say about double standards. I thought it would be more like My Antonia where she ends up in a happy, but simple place. Should have read spoilers first!
I agree. And My Antonia was excellent. There is something about Hardy's writing that I find very appealing, despite the dreary settings and terrible outcomes. I should re-read it to see if how I feel has changed.
Nice work on your TBRS!
