On Basilisk Station - Female captain with space cat familiar! It's pretty dense with technobabble, military politics, tactics, and lots of characters. It took me a couple tries to get going but after a while I really got into the series and have gotten through the first five books.
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet The Long Way to a Small, Angry PlanetThis was recommended to me because I love the show Firefly & I was not disappointed. It has strong themes of friendship & acceptance.
"Follow a motley crew on an exciting journey through space—and one adventurous young explorer who discovers the meaning of family in the far reaches of the universe—in this light-hearted debut space opera from a rising sci-fi star."
I loooooved The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet soooo much - it was one of my fave reads last year! I have the sequel but haven't read it yet (I'm doing that thing where I don't want to read it because I always want it to be there for me - argh!)
I'm sold on both already because space cat familiar yes, and Firefly also yes.I think I will nominate Planetfall by Emma Newman. I've heard good things
Request made for The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet at my library! This nomination thread is already a success! Considering Planetfall as well.
Here's a bunch of options from my to-read list:The Three-Body Problem
Hellspark
Annihilation
Ninefox Gambit
Foreigner
Infomocracy

I read Three Body Problem last month. It's great but it is SUPER dense. Like it is HARD sci-fi. Highly recommend though.
We doing graphic novel suggestions too: If so...Wires and Nerve, Volume 1 by Marissa Meyer The story follows Iko from the Lunar Chronicles.
Saga, Vol. 1 by Brian K. Vaughan (if for some reason it hasn't been a pick yet)
V for Vendetta by Alan Moore
Novels:
Just One Damned Thing After Another by Jodi Taylor
Dragonflight by Anne McCaffrey
Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld
Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Corey
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
This list was longer than I had intended lol. Turns out I have a lot of Sci-fi on my 'to read' list
Ooh, yeah! Planetfall! I just got that one. Good pick, Anita! And Infomocracy! Yes. I've been meaning to read that for quite a while now.

I've heard the whole series is just like mind-boggingly dense. My husband LOVED it but also knew I would probably lose my mind trying to read it.
Ninefox Gambit is like being thrown into the deep end of the pool and not knowing how to swim. Or like, walking into a movie 45 minutes late and just having to go along with not knowing what the hell is going on for the rest of the ride. I didn't hate it (and it just got nominated for a Nebula!) but I really didn't love it.

Hi Suevians! It was brought to my attention that one of April's nominations has already been read in this book club before, (The Handmaid's Tale) and therefore not eligible for the polls. I've removed the book and added a week to the voting period. If this was your vote, I apologize, and please head back to vote on another book to read for our Sci-Fi themed read in April. If you haven't voted yet, you got a week to do it.
Happy Reading!
