Suggestions/Feedback
This sounds like a lot of fun! In another book club that I participate in what we do is pick a theme for each month (such as summer, boarding-school, magic, ect) . People suggest books based on the theme and 5 of the suggustions are put onto a poll for members to vote on. The book with the most votes is the one we will read that month. This works very well in the other group! It gets everyone to participate. Another idea is for the end of the month liveshows you could have different booktubers every time. Like with the Booksplosion group there are always the same people who host the live show and all the people are awesome but there is never really a chance for us less popular booktubers to participate. I mean, we usually treat you guys on the liveshows like booktube celebrities. If we had different people each time (with the exception of you of course) than it would feel more like an, I don't know, actual bookclub than just a Q and A with our favorite booktubers. But that's also what goodreads is for right. If you just made a thread for people to volunteer to be in the live show if they have a booktube account than you could choose some of them (randomly?) each time to be in the live show and such. You'd just have to make sure they're reliable first. These are all just suggustions and i know whatever you work in the end for this bookclub will be fantastic. Also the Read-a-thons are a great idea! I CANNOT WAIT! THIS IS GOING TO BE SO MUCH FUN!
One book a month or every fortnight would do it I think. I agree with the theme idea too. Read-a-thons would help also, get us all motivated to read. The read-a-thon could be like a few books, 2-3 books that the group has chosen that must be read in the read-a-thon too. :)
Ya I agree with the theme idea ... and that during 2 week we do readthon to finish 2 or 3 book ...Good luck catriona
I agree with the timeline you are thinking of. I would LOVE to participate with you all, but I don't like read-a-things that feel stressful or make me feel pressured to read 40+ books.I love the theme idea as well along with the poll (polls are very important). Some theme ideas could be contemporaries, roadtrip books, fantasy world rereads, most popular books of the moment, and new releases.
I'm already excited to get started!
I am loving the theme idea, and I was contemplating whether or not to have a liveshow, but I think it would be a wonderful idea to have some volunteers join me! Thank you so much for all your input so far :)
I think this is a great idea! I reckon the themes idea is a great suggestion because it allows people to broaden their literary horizons and try books they wouldn't normally read. I also like having the alternate volunteers hosting the liveshow.I also realised that recently there have been a lot of book to movie adaptations that have been released recently (like Divergent) I think that an idea could be to read the books, then watch the movie and finally have a live show where we discuss our thoughts (it doesn't have to be a brand new release, it could be an adaptation that's been out for a while, like City of Bones). I'm not too sure how that would work out because movie release dates are different from country to country, but it was something that just popped into my head :)
I love the suggestions idea and also the alternate volunteers hosting the liveshow idea! And I think it's awesome that you, Catriona, take into account all these ideas that people have, 'cause I think many groups just do what they want and people have to go along with it.Maybe, something that would also be a nice idea, would be to invite new indie authors to join the group for a discussion or something like that. A few groups do that and it's a great opportunity for both the readers and authors to meet new readers/authors and introducing new unknown novels to everybody.
Anyway, I'm really excited to see where this group will go and see everything happen from the start! :)
I think the theme idea is great, some of the themes could be books that you want to be turned into a movie or some of the members favourite books. Maybe if people had book blogs then they could make a post on that as well about the books we'll be reading for the month so that it can spread the word more. I can't wait to get started! :)
Alice - I love that!!! I think inviting some indie authors is a fabulous idea! I'll definitely have a think about how I can about it :D
The themed idea is great, and definitely book to film adaptations should be a feature there! There is always a lot of discussion when our beloved novels hit the big screen!Seeing new and upcoming authors participate would be fantastic :)
Another option for a themed book would be perhaps suggestions for a genre you have not or don't often enjoy reading. I am certain fans of that genre would have ideas for books to get you started in a new realm of writing...
I am very excited for the first book! I have enjoyed book clubs introducing me to books I have read and otherwise would not have...and I have very much enjoyed them!
Yes book to movie adaptation talks and indie authors! Yes please!!I also had another theme idea that someone suggested on another group. The 'good' cover theme and the 'ugly' cover theme. Y'all know there are books we have all chosen based purely on the gorgeous cover *cough* Splintered *cough cough*
This would be a great chance to get those books off of our tbr while also giving our ugly duckling books a chance.
How do you guys feel about this idea?
how about a poll for four or more books for the next month and the winner is what we read for that month, this way is done fairly and we can read books from different genre. read a thon and monthly themes :)
Ha! Awesome to find this! One book a month seems like a pace I can keep up with :)
I very much like the idea to vote on the books and the monthly themes. Michelle had some suggestions for themes
"Some theme ideas could be contemporaries, roadtrip books, fantasy world rereads, most popular books of the moment, and new releases."
I would add 'foreign books' as a possible topic for a month. You know something translated from French, German, Japanese, Polish, or what have you.
Cheers
I LOVE the idea of a foreign theme. I have not read enough of those and I always enjoy them. Good idea!
I love the theme idea and i agree one book a month would be a great pace but one month we could try and get through a whole series such as trilogy or something and marathon it.
I Like the idea of polls, most bookclubs do that. However, instead of picking one you should do two, that way if you are a fast reader you have more options up for discussion or if you dont like or want to read one pick there is always the other book available!
Oooh Megan I love all of your ideas! It got me thinking that maybe there could be some kind of rollover group thread where the extra books are talked about. What I mean is if someone wasn't a fast reader then there would be a special thread waiting for them where all of the "unpicked books" for lack of a better term would go. That way fast readers have a chance to read more , as you suggested, and slower readers don't have to miss out on the other book. This also keeps spoilers far away. Lol
that michelle is a great idea! that way they can read them a couple of months late and it'd be no big deal
Can one of the book next month be "Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe" by Benjamin Alire Saenz?
I think it is a really cool idea, I have never done a Read-A-Thon or been part of a book club so I think this will be fun. :)
I say, this coming from the first poll now open. Little discussion page so we can mention a few reads we'd like to be considered for the month but then Catriona choses four or so for us to vote. If not everyone we'll keep adding books like crazy into the polls.

I was just about to put up a new page for this, thank you! :)

I'm really excited Catriona! This is such an awesome idea, and I'm going to do my best such as every fellow fan is going to! :D
You should really have a category for each month too so that the book and theme suggestion threads don't get to messy ^^
This is great! Ooo Sydney meet ups! Maybe occasionally we can have 'the public' select books that the group then votes on? *happy :)*
There are quite a lot of possibilities for a book club that really seems very popular on an international scale. This is great on a cultural basis as well as for so many other reasons! :D
I think doing a readathon back to back with the Booktubeathon could be cool, since the Yearathon and Bout of Books thing a while back went so well. I don't know how you'd feel about doing it like that but I know I'd be interested, at least.
Hi Catriona! I just wanted to say that I love this book club idea and that I think it would work out.
Where do we make suggestions for October? Also what will the theme be (I missed out on the suggestions for September)?
Victoria wrote: "Where do we make suggestions for October? Also what will the theme be (I missed out on the suggestions for September)?"
I will be putting up a post for October sometime in the next week or so :D
The theme hasn't been chosen yet, but I'll be taking a look at popular choices in the themes thread to do so :)
Also thought I'd respond to your message about more variety to say I am aiming to figure out the best way to select options for the poll - at the moments I'm trying two nominated by everyone and two selected by me. Still doing some trial and error ;)
Thinking back I do agree that the two Richelle Mead books may have been a bit much. My thinking was that since a lot of people nominated VA, which I have already read and don't really plan on re-reading anytime soon, I thought I'd pop in an alternative since I know a lot of people have read them too.
Most of the highly nominated books were actually ones that I had already read, so I'm also trying to figure out a way around that. I don't want to disregard the suggestions, but I started the book club to try and read new and exciting books (I do like to re-read, but do you get what I'm trying to say haha).... I really want to have as much input from everyone when it comes to selecting the books, so hopefully I can find the right balance!
Thank you for your feedback! I greatly appreciate it :)

Thanks for replying, Catriona. I take your point about picking what people vote for; that's fair enough. I too am hoping the book club will get me reading different things that I otherwise wouldn't, so maybe I should give VA a chance! I've really enjoyed Ready Player One, so already I'm happy I joined.
um... a suggestion would be to see the other books that were nominated from previous months? I know the main books that were the main choices for august cuz I saw your YouTube video.
but how about the others that people suggested? I don't know what were the other choices for September and I know if October if the book I voted for isn't what we are reading, I would love to go back and put it and maybe others on my "to-read-list"
I think it would be awesome to see everyone's past choices and give some late comers who are curious, to have a look on what we have been doing so far. :)
One or two books seems like a good pace for most people and a few books I absolutely loved (and loving currently) were the hush, hush saga, love letters to the dead, and me, and, earl, and the dying girl
Hi! I'm new to this group, and agree with Alexa that it would be awesome to see everyone's past choices. It would help me select my next few books to read so I could get an idea of what genres you all enjoy. :)
Alexa, Maggie: You can see previous nominations. The ones that got chosen you can look up in polls, the topics itself for nominations for past months are in the Archive here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...I hope I understood right, I hope that's what you meant.
hey everybody....will u all please be a member of "book....I'm comming for u!!!!!!" ....i would love have some of u to my book club...thank u.... :)
I have a suggestion, when we do book nominations, can we get a...2 week notice on what book we are going to read before the month starts? Im...the type of person who would like to see if my library can get it for their collection or from other libraries or if I'm gonna buy it, would like to save up money before hand. Thanks :)(And was there a November nomination or no, because of nanowrimo or something? I didn't see it under the topics)

Hi Alexa,
There is already a 2 week notice :) The poll goes up at the beginning of the month and until the middle of the month, when I post the announcement thread - so that gives you 2 weeks until the start of the next month, when we start reading :)
There was a November nomination, they all go under the Book Club INFO folder.

I think it would be interesting to have a section for NaNoWriMo as I believe there will be a certain amount of people doing it from the group ^^
It'd be great if the liveshow wasn't at the same time every month. It's at the most inconvenient time for my timezone right now. If it was even on Saturday I would watch it, but Monday morning just doesn't work. :(
I just joined this group! I've been wanting to join some kind of book club forever! So when I saw your video on youtube (which I'm in love with) on your "little book club" I was SO excited! And now I'm super excited to read this months book and talk about it with a bunch of people!:D YAY!

I've just joined too :) I really wanna join a book club that meets but my local library only has a kids group! I've been watching Catriona's youtube videos for awhile now & I think it was on twitter during the Deweys 24 Hour Readathon when she mentioned another readathon & I discovered she had a goodreads group!
Hopefully I can contribute to discussions here and the readathons will at least be closer to my timezone in New Zealand.

This is still a work in progress, I've only just created the page and I'm surprised to see so many of you have already joined and shown interest, so thank you! It has made me so excited to get started.
I've never done anything like this before, so things may get a little messy with the organisation - which is why I thought I'd start up a discussion thread to get some suggestions and/or feedback from you! If there's anything you'd like to put forward in terms of how this book club should run, how often to hold it, specific books you'd like to see here etc. then let me know!
I will also be doing some low-key read-a-thons every so often, so that should be fun!
Anyway, thank you for stopping by and I look forward to discussing some (hopefully) awesome books with you :)
