To everyone who knows them, best friends Miel and Sam are as strange as they are inseparable. Roses grow out of Miel’s wrist, and rumors say that she spilled out of a water tower when she was five. Sam is known for the moons he paints and hangs in the trees, and for how little anyone knows about his life before he and his mother moved to town. But as odd as everyone considers Miel and Sam, even they stay away from the Bonner girls, four beautiful sisters rumored to be witches. Now they want the roses that grow from Miel’s skin, convinced that their scent can make anyone fall in love. And they’re willing to use every secret Miel has fought to protect to make sure she gives them up.

Just starting this - a beautiful cover/love the sound of it.

A little behind this spoiler - but it's reminiscent of a fairy-tale. Beautifully written, but I'm uncertain right now.

41% (page 120)-nothing is quite what it seems. Not sure who Miel should be more scared of.

Just finished! It wasn't my favorite by any means, but it was still a decent read!

Definitely agree with the hard to follow part. I was quite put off in the beginning, but it did get better.

(view spoiler)[The only reason I was expecting it was because of the author's note in the beginning of my copy, which caused me to see the hints dropped in the first few chapters (he wouldn't take his shirt off, and there was a specific line mentioning "thoughts of what was and wasn't in his pants.) It definitely was quite odd! I mean, in the beginning I didn't like it, but it definitely grew on me.

I thought some aspects were pretty weird about the book, such as the somewhat detached/fairytale beginning, and how we didn't get a true introduction to Miel and Sam and their dynamic together before they slept together. It took most meaning out of it, since we barely knew the two. It also seems to be heavily based on metaphor and a deeper meaning as well, so if that entire feeling is missed, the book falls kind of flat.

It is a good novel though, especially for the way it explores certain social issues/ideas.

Finished-this is one of those that will probably get better with re-reads. A fantastic story which blended fantasy and realism well. Agree with many of you who say this is odd, but still lovely.

@Megan I actually just realized it wasn't the authors note, but the acknowledgements sorry! She mentioned her husband and their relationship there, and how she bugged him with questions about being transgender. I had the ARC version though.

(view spoiler)[This chapter was absolutely beautiful. I'm not even sure what to say. Pretty sure I love Aracely even more than before (and she's been my favourite character from the start). I don't know what went down in that river or whatever, but I'm glad that it help her become who she's always been on the inside. I do wish she'd tell Miel though, who blames herself for her brother's death. (hide spoiler)]

Finished chapter-Bay of Billows (view spoiler)[ I love Aracely so much. She's so dedicated to Miel despite how the two first met. But this fight between Sam and Miel broke my heart. Why won't they both just be honest with each other and be uprfront about everything? (hide spoiler)]

I didn't really see that coming, but it would make sense because of the advice Aracely was giving Sam about his journey as a transgender person. This is such a diverse book and I love it.
