5.1- Thoroughly Modern

Read a book written by an author whose first and last name initials can be found in MODERN. Letters may only be used as often as they appear. A last name is a name in the final position preceded by a space. One qualifying author in a work by multiple contributors works.

In general, yes. It is always safer to ask with a specific author or book.

Whoops! Yeah, should have figured to add the book, sorry. I'm looking at Porcelain: A Memoir by Moby

Yes, Moby works.

Bryony (bryony46) | 350 comments Would The Accountant's Story: Inside the Violent World of the Medellín Cartel by Roberto Escobar Gaviria be accepted? The author's name follows Spanish naming conventions and Escobar is a surname / last name, rather than a middle name.

Sorry, no. We go by the Goodreads record, regardless of national variations in naming conventions - otherwise, it becomes far too complicated to manage the thousands of posts we have to deal with each season.

Bryony (bryony46) | 350 comments Thanks, that makes sense. Back to the drawing board for this one then!

It seems so - why wouldn't it?

Maya (ferafaces) | 356 comments I was just making sure, my brain wasn't catching the concept of the space with initials last night. Thanks :)

Good morning,
Should I always check a book with a Moderator before putting it in the completed tasks? For the word MODERN, I would like to read «Remember When» by Nora Roberts and J.D. Robb, would this book be accepted? Thank you, Valérie B

No, from Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have all books ok'd in the help threads?

NO, NO, A THOUSAND TIMES NO!

There is no need to do this. Help threads were set up for 3 purposes. First, to ask for ideas about books if you can't come up with anything for the task and to offer suggestions for good books for the task, useful lists, or other sources for finding books for that task. Second, to clarify whether a questionable book will fit the task. A good example of this sort of question would be whether a color is actually okay for the task. Third, to verify a genre on the main page - since GR seems to mess with the main page on a daily basis, this protects you from having a genre disappear at the time your book task is posted.

If a book clearly fits the task (a specific word in the title, specific genre on the main page, set in the proper location) and meets the SRC requirements, such as those for length, childrens books, graphic novels, there is simply no need to ask for it to be ok'd in the help thread.

And, if it clearly doesn't fit the task, there is no need to ask about it in the help thread. Before you ask for a pre-approval, read the task and make sure your book fits the task requirements and the general SRC rules about length, childrens books, etc. If it doesn't work, there's no need to ask for pre-approval.

Please keep in mind that moderators and task creators are volunteers, with lives outside of answering questions in the SRC. There is no need to take up everyone's time with asking for pre-approvals of books that clearly fit or don't fit the tasks.

Please include the link to the book in question. The how-to is here
The edition you read may make a difference.
Remember When- Nora Roberts is listed on that GR book edition record, so the initials NR in modern work as it fits " One qualifying author in a work by multiple contributors works. "

Blueberry (blueberry1) | 465 comments Hang in there Valerie. I was incredibly confused in the beginning also with so many information threads and trying to search all over for answers but it gets easier. A key thing for me was to remember when posting a book is that every detail of the requirements must be followed or won't be accepted.
Have fun :)
