King Rat question

I am looking for a book I read back in the late 80's. It is about a group of prisoners of war. This POW camp is different as they are almost like their own little village. They marry, have children and live everyday lives, but within the confines of the camp. Then the war ends and they are rescued, but due to the families built, it becomes very complicated. I hope that makes sense. I'm pretty sure the POWs were American - but I can't remember what the time period was. I just remember the book being very good and would like to re read it, if I can ever figure out what it was called. Thank you.
