What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

It's a fantasy book about a librarian who gets a par of magic eye implanted in him( his eyes get taken out). What usually happens when this is done to almost everyone else who got the operation their eyes turned black but his stayed violet. Later on he gets his arms and legs and ears replaced with those of a dire beast. Their is also a coming of age ceremony in which everyone of a specific age holds a crystal and that crystal will then change colors depending on what they will do for the rest of their life(supposedly).
