I loved this. It was really interesting to get a peek at post-war Australia.

I have just finished reading this and really enjoyed it. The war scenes were effective in depicting the harsh conditions and in the second half of the book we saw the conditions of life in the outback.

I’m so glad you liked it as much as I did! I’d had a completely different concept of what to expect so the actual book was a wonderful surprise.

I had watched the Masterpiece Theater series way back when, and the book had so much more depth. I have read lots of Shute's novels and enjoyed them. This book didn't let me down. I think that his characters are generally very likeable and down to earth.

Tr1sha | 283 comments A wonderful book! I liked the way it was written using a narrator, which seemed to unify the 2 main parts of the story. The dreadful hardships in Malaya seemed shocking, though helped to put later difficulties into perspective. Despite so much suffering, it was amazing how much people were willing to help others even when it involved putting themselves at further risk.
