The Kindle book is just $3.99. https://www.amazon.com/Amberwell-Ayrt...I might be tempted to join in -- let me see how my time looks in a couple of weeks.
Abebooks has paperbacks that run $15 or $16 including shipping, less if you live in the UK. Amazon doesn't have any reasonably priced hard copies.

$3.99 is doable! Thanks, Tadiana. I have a few other reads to wrap up before then as well. I think it will be fun. I've never read this author.
I'd like to join in with this! It's available to borrow from the Kindle Owners' Lending Library, which I have, and I enjoyed Mrs Tim of the Regiment by the same author.
I'd love to read this one too. I enjoyed Miss Buncle's Book and Miss Buncle Married very much. Let me see...
I'll try to join. I might do the audible version as I have so many to physical read right now. The weather is so nice I need something for walking.
I'll join. I used one of my audible credits yesterday went ahead and got it. I have too many others I am committed to that will require the physical book to sit an read. I need an audio book for walks and commutes later this month anyway. I have not read this author before. Looking forward to it! Actually, I had not even heard of this author. I don't know why???? That seems strange to me. I love being part of this group! Some great reads being planned.

All I remember is Fred Mustard Stewart. And I never picked up one of his books, but I sure remember his name!
Alas! This isn't available for inter-library loan (must be fragile!). But I'll join in on the next D.E., if I can!

I've noticed Fred next to Mary too. :D He has a lot of shelf space! I was eyeing Ellis Island...some day, maybe.
Karlyne wrote: "I may just have to give in and read one - what if they're amazing?!?"What if????? ;-)
I'll have to check and see if any of my GR friends have read of reviewed one. That is always my best source for to read or not to read!
Enchantress Debbicat ^_^ wrote: "I'll have to check and see if any of my GR friends have read of reviewed one. That is always my best source for to read or not to read!"I never even thought of that!
Karlyne wrote: "Alas! This isn't available for inter-library loan (must be fragile!). But I'll join in on the next D.E., if I can!"Karlyne, I just checked and the Kindle version I bought of Amberwell is lending-enabled. I'm a quick reader--if you do Kindle books, would you like to borrow it from me when I'm done?
Enchantress Debbicat ^_^ wrote: "That is cool, Tadiana. I did not know kindle books could be loaned."Some can and some (usually the more expensive ones) can't. If you look on the Amazon page for the Kindle book, it tells you if it's loanable or not. And a Kindle book can only be loaned one time, for two weeks.
Come on and join, Karlyne. I'm looking forward to the audible one I got. I listened a bit to see if I like the narrator. And I do!

I am a very quick reader, Tadiana, but, unfortunately, I'm also a very near-sighted one, so I have trouble with e-readers. I've read a few on Kindle, but they really make my eyes tired. I do appreciate the offer, though!
Bummer! I'm very nearsighted too, but luckily I can get by fine with contacts (and, now, reading glasses). I'd be a sad night owl if I couldn't read on my Kindle!
Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ wrote: "Bummer! I'm very nearsighted too, but luckily I can get by fine with contacts (and, now, reading glasses). I'd be a sad night owl if I couldn't read on my Kindle!"The only benefit I've found from my near-sightedness is that having worn hard contacts for years (and years and years) I haven't developed much of a far-sightedness at all, so I can still read with books perched on my nose! My husband, he of 20/20 vision, who can see an elk's breath on the mountain at 10 miles, was really frustrated when he had to start wearing reading glasses. He buys them at the dollar store, because he leaves them everywhere he's been. I snicker quite often.
Man, that sounds exactly like my husband! Excellent vision (until he had to get reading glasses) and wildlife-spotter extraordinaire. He's partial to the Costco 3-packs of reading glasses, as am I. I've found that I need at least 5 or 6 pairs of reading glasses scattered around the house and in my purse for maximum efficiency. If I ever can't find a pair within a minute, I know it's time to buy another 3-pack. :DA side benefit of severe nearsightedness mixed with age-related farsightedness is that I can take my contacts out and have really great up-close vision. It's good for removing splinters, plucking out stray hairs, and such.

I prefer my contacts for face-work, though, because I look much younger....
Lol, we have wandered so far off topic. Sorry, Amy! We'll behave once the actual buddy read starts. ;)
Tadiana ✩Night Owl☽ wrote: "Lol, we have wandered so far off topic. Sorry, Amy! We'll behave once the actual buddy read starts. ;)"My apologies, also! It's the curse of our silly natures!
Sign me up for this read (I *did* find my copy of Amberwell this morning!) Ditto on the glasses btw; husband uses his (and he is always misplacing them! : ), eye dr. told us both we would see a difference within a couple of years with close vision and 'I will write you a prescription but the glasses at the dollar store are just as good' (he's an easy-going eye dr!) I haven't had to use mine yet if I have good lighting but I bet it won't be long : )
Abigail wrote: "I finished reading it yesterday and can’t wait for our discussion!"*grins* You totally jumped the gun on this buddy read, Abigail. But don't feel badly--I've done exactly the same thing with Mistress of Mellyn. It was there in my hands and I just couldn't resist.
Yes, I was waiting for a book to come in the mail (the assigned reading for my Jane Austen group), and there was Amberwell on the nightstand . . .
Today is the big day. We start on Amberwell. If you are joining us for the read along please report in. Let us know what format (i.e. audiobook, paper book, kindle) you'll be reading the book in and if you read it before.
I would love to also hear if you've read any DE Stevenson before.
I will be reading on my Kindle but might download the audiobook to because I've loved all the audio books I've listen to of her stories. This will be my first time reading Amberwell but I've read quite a few of her other stories and have love them all. My favorite has been Celia's House followed by Miss Buncle.
Hola! I am joining and began listening to the audio this morning on the way into work. This is my first DE Stevenson.
I have an old paperback, the one pictured here: Amberwell. I just finished reading it a few days ago and discovered that as with Amy, I had not read the book before, even though I’ve had it for a long time. I have read several other Stevensons, including Summerhills, The Four Graces, and Miss Buncle’s Book. Here’s a question to provoke discussion: We definitely seem to be in cozy territory here, but are we really?
I'm almost halfway through now and boy the family relationships! is that what you mean Abigail, or are you talking about the war? (in my book the war is just starting...) So I will see what's ahead. I had read this book once before but can't remember much of it (I am much more familiar with many of her other books that I have read over and over again : )
I've read four? (I think) D.E. Stevenson books before. Celia's House and Miss Buncle's Book impressed me; The Young Clementina and another one where there's a guy-stealing sister and a plainer, long-suffering sister (can't remember the name) didn't. ETA: It was Anna and Her Daughters.I'll try to start tonight. I've got the Kindle version.
Should be able to start tomorrow. It will be my third, having read Miss Buncle's Book, and the sequel, Miss Buncle Married - both great fun. Actually, I've got the third one waiting for me (The Two Mrs Abbbotts).
