I'm currently reading it and I'm almost finished. Putting aside the romance part, there really was nothing all that special about this book. Though I do like the way it's written in the old days but it doesn't oblige to all the "rules" one must say, of those days. Same sex relationships are normal, women are fighting as well as men. So yeah I think it's a good read but not special.
I finished this the other day and wanted to like it much more than I did. The romance was nice but it wasn't spectacular. I wanted much more from these characters and there were so many missed opportunities I thought. The side characters had huge, important decisions and yet their characters weren't even remotely fleshed out. Thandi was the most contradictory character - it's like a personality couldn't be picked for him so that made it confusing. I did really like that it was set back in the olden days but the societal rules were quite different than ours. They were much more accepting than we are even today and I loved that part about it.
I think the story picked up and became more interesting in the end and has potential in the next book. I'll continue with the series personally - I was just really excited about this one so maybe that is what let me down a little. Still worth a read regardless.
I'm a few weeks late but I did get around to finishing this book and I did really like it. I was hoping I'd give it 5 stars but I just didn't love it. The end was great and I'm kinda bummed that it's a standalone, since I think it would work best as a duology. I don't normally like the romance part of the plot but I thought it was the best aspect when it came to this book. I figured out how the traitor was very early on so I'm like come on guys, there's like 3 chapters left and you need to catch on lolMy only issue really is why, if men and women are presented as basically equals in this book, can't the princesses marry instead of Denna being betrothed to Thandi?
