Tim Willocks, The Religion and its sequel The Tweleve Children of Paris. Christian Cameron, The Long Sword and The Ill Made Knight. Bernard Cornwell, the Saxon Series are all good choices.
Tim thanks for the advice. I have read the Saxon series and thoroughly enjoyed them as with the majority of Bernard Cornwells books.
Absolutely recommend Gates of Fire: An Epic Novel of the Battle of Thermopylae. Battle scenes are riveting.
Yes read Gates of fire many years ago, a fantastic book with great battles. I will give Pride of Carthage a go too thanks.
Pride of Carthage is pretty epic. Can be slow at times, but so much good about it that it kind of makes up for it.
I'd also recommend:The Outlaw series by Angus Donald
Conn Iggulden's War of the Roses series
Robert Low's Oathsworn series
I have to second the Tim Willocks suggestion, and I would add that Green River Rising and Bloodstained Kings have some excellent action-packed fight scenes in a more modern setting.Bernard Cornwell's Saxon series is fantastic, but I must say I much prefer James L. Nelson's Norsemen saga. These books frequently combine intricately detailed swordplay descriptions with a backdrop of shieldwalls / military tactics for a fast-paced, riveting experience. Jim happens to also be an avid sailor, which lends an authentic feel to the nautical bits of his stories. Fantastic characters are what keep me coming back, though. Can't recommend this series enough.
I would nominate the final battle scene in Sharpe's Trafalgar as probably the best battle scene I've ever read.
