Hi, I thought that I would introduce myself. My name's Teagan and I'm from Australia. I have a blog at wordpress: http://aphrapaul.wordpress.com/ and a Figment account where I upload all of my writing. I've been published in the anthology Written Portaits 2013: Portraits at Home (which isn't on Amazon!)

I'm new to Goodreads and this is the first group I've joined :) Does anybody have any book recommendations or amazing things to do on this site that they'd like to tell me about? I'm still exploring!

You're welcome at ROBUST, Teagan. Does Portraits at Home mean you like biography?

"Portraits at Home" was the theme of the competition that the book was centred around. A lot of the other participants did really different stories; mine was autobiographical a bit, I guess.

I've never really read biographies or autobiographies. I'm a fan of fantasy and science fiction, but I've started to get into the classics this year because I read books too quickly! Classics are so complex and leave a lot of food for thought, which is something that I always look for in a book.

Do you have any classics that you'd recommend? And thanks for the welcomes :) I'm happy to be a part of ROBUST.

Matt Posner (mattposner) | 276 comments I come to goodreads mainly for this group. What some people do in goodreads is join reading/discussion groups for books in their area of interest. Then they get a book of the month to read and discuss.

If you want to get books to review, there are groups where indie authors asks for reviews. However, the moment you peek your head into one of those groups, you will be inundated with (cough cough) more trash than treasure. As an author, I gave up on that a long time ago.

The goodreads platform for blogging is fairly useful if you don't need images. I put longer texts into my goodreads blog because my own website can't handle them.

The classics are the classics because everyone recommends the same, Jane Austen and so on.

About books for review: if you want to review books, you could tell the writers on ROBUST, who're generally better than the those Matt dismisses. (For some reason, poor writers don't last long here.) Quite a few write fantasy and SF.

Matt Posner (mattposner) | 276 comments Agreed. Everyone on this list whose work I have read is five stars across the board.

We have very thoughtful discussions about the industry also. When I see something worth talking about, I put it here to see what group members have to say about it. I learn a lot.

K.A. Jordan (kajordan) | 3042 comments I've got a free book on Amazon this week.

'Swallow the Moon' by K. A. Jordan - It turned out well and has been well received. It's a Parnormal Romance/Ghost story, but I wrote it more like a traditional Romantic Suspense than vampire-porn.

Just downloaded 'Swallow the Moon' on my Kindle. It might take me a little while, but I'll try to read it as soon as I can and write a review. You had me sold at 'not vampire-porn'. 'Twilight' has a lot to answer for...

K.A. Jordan (kajordan) | 3042 comments 'Twilight' certainly does! It's spawned that horror 50 Shades of gag me with a spoon. LOL

I SWEAR there are no sparkling vampires in the book!

I can personally attest that Swallow the Moon is a comfortable, enjoyable read. I reviewed it myself, sometime back.

If you're more into the space invader and high fantasy types of novels, check out Defenders of Valinthia. I normally don't self promote, and this might not count as it's still free on Amazon and everywhere else. But if you like the elements I mentioned, along with some comedy, you might enjoy that one too.

And by the way, nice to meet you. :) Checking out your blog in a few minutes.
