Lets discuss chapters 9-12 of Caraval!

(Does there need to be spoiler warnings with these? I mean it's a discussion of these chapters, so I'm just going to assume you've read them before reading this)

I really enjoyed these chapters, everything is beginning to pick up a lot more. We learned a lot more about Julian, though there is still a lot he's hiding. When he played Caraval the first time, I'm curious as to whether he was with someone else?
I still found Scarlett to be a bit annoying and goody two shoes, but it doesn't bother me a whole lot.

Onward to Night One of Caraval!

Dimitris (dimitris_lianos) I loved those chapters too, I'm impressed with the author's abitily to convey this imaginary world to the reader so convincingly and effortlessly. Beautiful, original metaphors as well.

So it's true Julian had more agenda, he had been there before, I'm super excited to discover how he had been disqualified, if they'll discover him, also his motives, if he's really just using Scarlett (I love how he keeps calling her "Crimson" and she has stopped correcting him, hehe)

Also the introduction of another hot and interesting male character - Dante - was a nice surprise, maybe Scarlett will turn to him. I loved reading him described as uselessly pretty (p113) ;)

Finally, I didn't quite understand what happened when Scarlett used the clue and found herself outside her sister Tella's room. What was going on in there? Why wouldn't Tella let her in? Who was she with? Yet another unknown boy? Who later kidnapped her? Or Caraval Master Legend himself? (btw how do you guys pronounce the title, where is the accent, Cáraval or Caravál?) So she's in on the game with Master Legend himself? That's why she was so determined that she'll never return to her Conquered Isle of Trisda again? But why not confide all this to Scarlett but rather leave her to struggle?...

I feel Julian and her long-lost mother are somehow connected to Caraval, maybe I'm forming a crazy theory about Julian and Master Legend himself in my mind! Let's read some more! :)

Christiana Tomlinson | 8 comments So I'm flying through this and I'm losing track of the chapters. I'm probably just going to wait until I finish and we get to the end of the book to post all my thoughts. I've read 300 pages since yesterday morning...

Sure, you can definitely wait to the end to share your thoughts :) I've been holding back from reading a whole bunch because I'm not entirely sure if everyone has their copy of Caraval yet, because there's only a few people commenting on the actual chapter discussions. But I'm too tempted to read now, so I think I'm going to speed through it this weekend ^_^

Well errr- I believe Tella wouldn't let Scarlett in because she was in the middle of getting it on with some unknown person XD Well at least that's what Scarlett seems to think. However, it seemed like there was a lot of thudding going on in the room (I mean maybe they were just REALLY going at it), but maybe she was actually being held hostage? I'm not too sure. That's an interesting theory that perhaps the sister is in on this with Legend himself.
I believe I pronounce it Caravál? Idk I probably change how I say it each time haha.

Yes Julian is definitely turning out to be interesting, I think your right with thinking Julian and Scarlett's mother are somehow connected to Caraval. I was actually thinking perhaps Julian or this new Dante character could end up being Legend in disguise! I'm going to read a bunch this weekend and update with my thoughts :)

Dimitris (dimitris_lianos) I too believe that Master Legend must be in disguise, everywhere about Caraval, keeping an eye on everything going on :))) Maybe he's even Scarlett's unnamed fiancé, the Count... He's certainly not playing it fair, I think he's helping his faves win the game. What can The Wish be, I wonder?... Could Scarlett just wish for her father to drop dead if she wins?
So many questions, I fear the really important one won't even be answered in this book but in the concluding one next year... This book is such a pleasant surprise so far.
