I'm currently writing a book about self-denial and its relevance to today's world. One passage includes a brief discussion of mortification (especially the more rigorous forms, like the cilice and self-flagellation). What is your sense of how widespread these practices are in the Church today? I've been assuming that they are very rarely used nowadays, but I also know I could be dead wrong about that. Any insight you'd like to provide would be most welcome.
