Dark Hunter: Books

Acheron (DH #)
Actually, I believe she originally intended it to be two books, and the change was a publisher's decision. The two halves are very different in writing style and you're correct that the second part felt rushed. I think there are quite a lot of people that feel that way!
Of course, I despised Tory and couldn't understand the connection between them at all. I was sorely disappointed with her as a heroine, as I've never been before in SK's books. Perhaps a better crafted second half would have changed my opinion of the narrow-minded, rude, immature woman, but as it stands, I still dislike her.
I think also that we were all so anxious to read the Big Guy's book and his past was so EPIC that we expected the same of his HEA. It fell flat due to our high expectations.
And then Ash became a wussy.
Sigh.

Thanks Michelle
You are definitely not the only one who feels that way. I'm really hoping there will be more of Ash and Tory. Second part of Acheron's book wasn't a rush, for me, but it was short. I liked it that it ends well... but when you're a HUGE fan of Acheron, you thirst for more, true? Lol.
I had just started the series when I found Archeron at the library so I read it second and then went back to the beginning and read in order (mostly). It really colored what I thought of the other DH and what they theorized Archeron was because I already knew. I don't know that I would recommend that to other readers. It is weird now having to wait for the next book to be released.
I have also read all the dark hunter books. I was so excited to read Acheron's book. I also felt the second part was rushed. The only problem I had with Tory was the last I read about her she was a little cousin, so to vision her as a woman was a bit hard for me. But I just love Acheron and just to see him away from Artemis was joy for me.
I got this book on the clearance rack at borders. I was just killing time and looking for something new to read. I couldn't put it down!!! I just had to find out what happened to Acheron. I didn't realize it at the time that it was either 15 or 16 in the series. Now I've started at the beginning of the series and read the first 2. While they are interesting, they are not as good as Acheron. I'm going to be starting book #3 tonight.
The books only get better as the series goes on because you find out more of the back stories of everyone and also learn more about the gods and goddesses and all which is pretty cool. I think Ash and Tory will be in more books but she is going to focus mostly on Jaden now and with him comes Jared and who knows who else!!
Yes, you're right. The first one, particularly, even though entertaining, is hardly up to the quality of later ones, but there is no doubt, Acheron stands out. I heard of audio books I can buy for many of the Darkhunter Series and I'm now saving my money. I already have Acheron from audible.com and it is one of the best audiobooks I've ever 'read'.
Acheron vs Harry Potter, think if that wizard stupid enough to use the killing curse to save his arse imagine what ashes mummy is going to do, personally I'd like to meet her have lunch
I really liked Acheron. Yes, the 2nd half was a little rushed but that was OK with me. Usually I am nit picky about rushed endings but maybe it is my overwhelming love for all things Acheron that made it OK ;)
I think I handled the rush of the second half pretty well. It was just the relationship between Tory and Ash that didn't seem to work for me. Especially in regards to her treating him like he can't do his job in a few later books. And I think it might be because I read the last few books out of order before reading Ash's book. And I know time moves on in the books true enough. But it was still stood out to me that Tory was 15 in Arik's book/one moment and then in Ash's book she is grown enough to be in a relationship with Ash. That still boggles my mind. So sort of added to my perception that she wasn't quite mature enough and ready for a relationship.
I can see your point DHfan. I was a little irritated with her when it came down to the fight at the end of One Silent Night. I do appreciate that Ash treats her as an equal, though.Totally agree about the age thing. Although I truly think that since Ash is so incredibly special it would be hard to have a character as unique and as him to be his soul mate...

Yea, I do think it is great that Ash treats her as equal as well. And is just as protective of her as she is of him. But when it comes down to kicking some butt, I'm so used to the heroine being there to fight as well. Or at least stepping back and letting the hero do what he has to do. The treating him like a little kid part I'm not cool with. And totally had to agree with Stryker when he said he didn't have a clue what Ash saw in Tory.
And yea I get that Ash is a special character unto himself for sure. But in my opinion, God powers, immortality and all the perks aside. I believe he would be a rather interesting person if he was purely human. As he has a wide variety of interests and get along with pretty much everybody. Tory was just so one note when she got older. 15 year old Tory seemed much more fun and interesting.
Hum, Acheron was BY FAR my favorite character so far. I just finished his book. Personally I would have loved a little shorter part 1 and a longer part 2. I LOVED Tory. I get the impression that she could care less how "Godly & Great" he is, she wants to protect him. Yeah, I see how that could wuss him out, but SO WHAT! That man should take a page from Salvatore's life and go freakin surfing, Or atleast spend more time jumpin out of airplanes. He has lived to long and fought to hard and dealt with to much ****ed up S***. If I where Tory I too would do whatever I could to protect him and make his life cushy and easy. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. Just because he CAN handle it and is a Bad A$$ God, doesn't mean he SHOULD... LOL
True but if he doesn't then his mom would. And well that doesn't bring any good to any one. And he cares way too much for others to just sit back. Nothing wrong with her wanting to protect him either. Just I think she needs to realize his heart is too big to just sit back. And when your mom is bent on destruction and you have your own hair trigger like Ash. Me thinks he needs more than some surfing time lol.
Dhfan4life wrote: "I think I handled the rush of the second half pretty well. It was just the relationship between Tory and Ash that didn't seem to work for me. Especially in regards to her treating him like he can't..."You have to remember, Dark-Hunters have (pretty much) been in realtime, and Dream Hunter took place in 1990, 18 years before Acheron. So it was a step back through time for that book, then back on track.
Ah I didn't know that AJ (hopefully you don't mind the name shortening). I still hold to the 15 year old Tory one minute and then getting it on with Ash the next. Just gives me the heebie jeebies even though I love Ash, lol.
I think i would have been happy with Ash getting in on with ANYONE so long as HE wanted them. Ash could have turned into a phyco and I STILL would have been rooting for him...Me thinks hos Mom should SHIT DOWN AND SHUT UP & let the boy Play. He will end the world when he is damned good and ready LOL
LOL, Now tell that to her face Melody. :P And she has been sitting for a very long time. All that plotting and longing to be who she is. I dare someone even try and say something like that to her. Talk about peeling the flesh from your bones one strip at a time. And she does let him play after all he did pick his #1 play mate. And I'm glad they gave him time to be hooked up with any one. As I'm starting to get kind of annoyed with some of these books where the hero and heroine hook up so fast and it doesn't read/feel genuine to me. So although I may not like some stuff about Tory at times, but to some extent their story was kind of reasonable. And heck who would blame him for going nuts and taking on his true destiny. Now that would be the day for sure as I at times feel if he doesn't want to do it, I could. :D
*ducks down and hides* No! You tell her!!! Yeah, I am SO on board with you. I HATE how 11 THOUSAND years he has lived alone & then this chick throws a hammer and its over. POOF!! IN LOVE WILLING TO DIE.
Its not believable.
Plus, add in all the other Hunters all finding there true love in what seems to be damned near the same time (give or take a few years)It is to much at times.
Its not just the DH though. The Black Dagger Brotherhood, Midnight Breed, The Carpaithains and the list goes on and on... They all are like dominos, and all waited hundreds of years... tick tick tick they all fall in a row...
Lol well the length of time of them finding their mates isn't too bad to me as I figure in the romance world it all comes pretty quickly. And I do mean that both ways with some characters, lol. It is just the how it is written that gets me. In particular I'm not a fan of the Carpathaians as I think the guys take too many liberties. And I'm just starting the Black Dagger books and so far the chemistry is just off and not what I feel is conducive to being a solid/ and good relationship for Wrath and Beth. I mean I get that the dudes have issues and even some of the heroines. But to me it was just kind of put out there that the dude was cheating on his first wife (even though he didn't pick her) with the daughter of his friend even though he didn't initially want anything to do with her either. But guess with time things get better for all of the dudes of these series. Save for those Carpathians too me. Too he-man for me.And I so have no death wishes here where Apollymi is concerned. I'd rather see her pester Savitar for all eternity than peel my flesh lol. But something tells me he would definitely enjoy her company. Such a odd bit of chemistry between them.
Melody wrote: "I think i would have been happy with Ash getting in on with ANYONE so long as HE wanted them. Ash could have turned into a phyco and I STILL would have been rooting for him...Me thinks hos Mom ..."
Lol let the 11000 year old bastard live in peace he needs to learn one final lesson from savitar........the meaning of life.............the perfect wave
It's a hoot just imaginaging him sitting on the board like that in the first place. Being in those duster jackets and stuff is such his calling. That to see him in an actual beach setting is just so mind boggling on it's own, lol.
Hmmm. Naw. I think it's better to just leave him with his guitar and his select few ladies around him.
For my sak and his past plz no stripping u girls are going nuts and the plane thing melody u should do it i've done it with others but now i got my license to do it by myself i wanna try that winged parachute next
Wow what was it like Adam? I have a terrible fear of heights and jumping out of air planes be the last thing on my mind. Interesting when others do it.
Hmm, how about as a way of avoiding debt collecters too? I have more than a few of those on my back for the time being, lol.
HECK NO!!! Been there! Jumped out of THAT! Wished I'd have died it scared me SO bad.. Heck my heart rate it picking up just thinking about it... Maybe if I was with Ash... Umm, OK! NO! Not even then... Well unless he was Naked.. LMAO Couldn't resist. (For Adams sak OF COURSE)
Naw not even then. I swear heights scare the crap out of me good. I'd probably be a comatose body with a parachute more likely than an active diver. So definitely not for me.
Me either... I'll watch from the ground OK.. Adam you and Ash can jump together.. Me and DH will watch and Laugh OK??
..... just starting the Black Dagger books and so far the chemistry is just off and not what I feel is conducive to being a solid/ and good relationship for Wrath and Beth.....Forewarning that book is kind of a rough start, but give it a chance. Ward develops the characters better after that book and they get so much more juicy than Wrath and Beth.
The only one that grated my nerves was Phury, I could have skipped his book all together, but it had back-story that needed to be read.
I've read Rhage and Mary's and liked it. And I'm rooting for Butch and Marissa. And have liked Tohrment and Darius from the get go. As well as Phury. Vishous is growing on me too. But Z pisses me off point blank. And as I read SK's books first can't help noticing the contrast. But I'm giving them a shot.
Vishous really surprised me, he became my favorite. Something about him just struck me. I agree with you about Z he's a pain in the petunia, quit whining already is what I want to scream at him!
I know Z has had a messed up past and can't help what happened to him. But I want a chick to kick his ass just once, lol. I might get boos from Z fans. But he soooo needs it with the way he was in the first two books.
Funny I thought Zsadist is very much like Zarek, and I think very few have a problem with him. Z's not my favorite but I liked his book.As for Acheron's book. I thought it was nearly perfect. I think 2 books would have been best, though. As in not shortening the 1st half of the book but giving Tory and Ash a chance for their love to fully develop.
I didn't really mind about the rushed thing, I just love Ash so much, she could've done pretty much anything and I would've loved it.
I liked Tory. She felt like a real person to me-with her insecurities, emotions, and lack of kickass ability. She just became immortal, give her time, sheesh.
As for Ash turning into a wuss, after 11000 years of being miserable he deserves a chance for some R&R, true?
I think in some ways Wrath was more like Zarek than Zsadist. I mean they both may have been slaves and push others away. But Wrath had more snappyness about him like Zarek does. And even though Zarek did get mad enough to blow out Astrid's lights in her cabin when she was judging him. He never truly hurt her. Where as Zsadist fears a woman being in charge cause of his own past experiences. But yet and still he seems to have these sort of intimidation or rape tactics around women. Like when he first met Beth trying to grab her in Wrath's bed. And pulling Mary out into the open when Rhage first brought her to the compound. I mean it may suck what happened to him. But he really pisses me off and I don't see the comparison at all between the two. I'll add too that although Wrath was fighting ascending to the thrown. Zarek in his own way was fighting ascending to being the best man he could be and to whom Ash always knew was inside him. I mean for all the trouble Zarek got into, there still wasn't a 100% watch your women or anything watch out around him cause he was terribly dangerous. But with Zsadist the others always wanted him on full clock watch. And having his brother beat him even if it was to keep him in control in his own mind was still not really cool to me. Actually was pretty selfish as he didn't care how much it hurt his brother as well to do that to him. As for Zarek he never let anybody do anything for or have the ups on him. He was an equal opportunity push awayer (I so know that isn't a word but still kind of catchy huh?, lol). And I think it was a publisher's choice more so than SK's to put both books into one. Which however short the second one was. I think it was a good idea to do that so we didn't have to wait months in between for the first and second part if they were printed separately. And to me Tory lost a lot of who she was from when she was a kid. I think she got so caught up in her family legacy with the Atlantis stuff that she was a one trick pony for me. And in some ways she didn't read like a real person. Bride read more that way than Tory to me. But I do agree Ash does need his R&R. But at the same time when he has to do his job he also needs some "knock em' dead, honey." Type of moral from Tory instead of "let me sit on you til you hatch." Type of lingo going on.
I think I would've preferred to wait for the book and have Tory develop into a 'real-er' person, lol.I just...don't know what exactly to feel about the book though. I loved it, but I would have preferred we see more of Ash and how he got rid of his demons, also more of the kickass attitude from him. I just felt he was different than in the other books. Not a wuss, exactly, just different...
As for Zsadist his actions felt...real to me. Assholish sure, but real. He was a sex slave and in the power of a woman for 100 years. It isn't easy being forced to get over that, or forget that his own perfect twin brother had a seemingly perfect life and to always remind him of what could have been...
As I said not my favorite, but I can get past the jerk that is Zsadist...
I liked Phury(or at least his book) less...
And that is where the hidden talent of looking at books at different angles comes in. I had to do that one myself reading Ash's book, so I never really saw him as a wuss per se either. Just from a different angle and discovered this is how he might actually be if it wasn't for half that crap happening to him. But that's my gist of it though and I'm sticking to it, lol.And I'll try and flip things at an angle for Zsadist. But I still want his ass kicked though.
I agree with Mimi's take on Zsadist. Yeah he was a jerk but at the same time people handle things differently. Like Ash. I think it was even said That most who when through what he did would not be as caring of others. Yet he is. I guess my point is most would be like Zsadist. Willing to hurt others to protect themselfs. No thought for the cost and not giving a chance to see if there is truly danger. I guess its kinda a turn the tables defence. How he was hurt he would in turn hurt others. Not because he wants to but because of fear and protection. Thats my take...But I also believe no matter what, not everyone will always love every book the same. Thank God there are SO many out there... :)
I hear ya Melody. And differences of opinion is good too at times. And in general I'm just finally glad that the library finally has Lover Revealed in transit from another place and soon coming to me. :D Can't wait.
Oh Lover Revealed... Mmmm Your gonna like THAT one... Or atleast I did... I am So in love with V... *SIGH* I need to start keeping a list. I am IN LOVE with toooooo many men to keep up with em all... Oh I LOVE fiction to be able to make that OK... LOL
We have a list of book boyfriends over on Book Lover's Hideaway. List is always growing. And wait I thought V's book was Lover Unbound and Lover Revealed was Butch and Marissa's book. Confuzzled now.
LOL Yeah. Lover Unbound is V's book BUT just like the other books all the Brothers are in all the books... Its one of the things I LOVE the most about this series. It is so nice to know what the others are doing even after their book has passed. There is a few part of Lover Revealed that V is a big part of. You will see... Oh yes! I hope u love it too.
I have just heard 'savin me' - Nickleback for the first time in ages and it's given me series Acheron withdrawels lol It's my favourite part of his book!
