Also, the friend's parents leave their porch light on and he acknowledges that it's like a lighthouse light, supposed to be welcoming someone home, except their son is dead, so he'll never make it in. Then it ends up that the light was to welcome /him/ there when he was ready to talk to them. That's basically the only detail I can remember other than the fact that he just keeps replaying the scene when his friend died, and his memory is messing with him, so it changes a tiny bit each time.

Jenna, what year did you read this book? This will help narrow down the search.
How did the boy die? (Just provide a clear warning before revealing a spoiler.)
Location - U.S./country, region, big city/small town/suburbs?

I read it somewhere around 2008-2010, and it was set in the suburbs I think. As for how he died...
**spoiler**
He and his friend were messing around with a gun. In the first few times he's remembering the scene, I think he remembers it misfiring or his friend had it, but after the cops question him a few times and his memory changes I //think// he was the one who accidentally pulled the trigger.
