Genevieve Carstairs (mirandacarstairs) | 1022 comments Gabriel was laying on his bed and reading the book Charlotte had brought him, and feeling very I'll. his body was shaking and he was sure he would be hit with another coughing attack soon. The book was a particularly good one, written by the same author Will was always on about. The title read Great Expectations, and when Charlotte had first given it to him, he had believed the book would fail his own "great expectations". However, as he read it, he began to enjoy it more and more,'finally realizing why Will had enjoyed reading so much.
He hear a small knock on his door, and put the book down on his bedside table, hoping that it was Cecily who was knocking.

Ananya (ananyashenoy) | 1360 comments Cecily did not wait to be invited in. She pushed open the door and looked inside. She saw Gabriel lying on the bed and she could just make out the title of the book she was reading. She had not enjoyed that book so much. She slowly walked inside. "How are you feeling?" she asked softly, hastily brushing back her messy hair with her fingers. She had forgotten she was still wearing her nightclothes.

((I gtg soon.))

message 4: by Genevieve (new)

Genevieve Carstairs (mirandacarstairs) | 1022 comments "Cecily!" He exclaimed, looking ecstatic, grinning wildly. "You came!" As he was about to respond to her question, the coughing fit he had known was going to come erupted inside of him. His body convulsed slightly and his throbbing head encountered a headache worse than he'd felt in a long while. "Fine," He croaked in between coughs. "I'm... Feeling... Fine." He smiled feebly at her, as though he wanted her to believe it was funny. He was still coughing slightly, but the majority of the attack had passed.

message 5: by Ananya, Group Creator (new)

Ananya (ananyashenoy) | 1360 comments "I know you're not fine." she said in a small voice. She came closer to him. "But I meant, are you fine being here all alone with nobody around to talk too?" She wanted to hug him but he was still coughing and she didn't know whether she should. " Will was going to forbid me from visiting you." she said. "He doesn't want me to fall ill but I....I couldn't think of you all alone here. It must be so lonely."

((Gtg))

message 6: by Genevieve (new)

Genevieve Carstairs (mirandacarstairs) | 1022 comments Gabriel wanted to hold Cecily close to him, to embrace her and let out how horrible he felt, locked up in this room alone. But he didn't want her to worry about him, she already had too much to worry about, what with her brother and all. So instead, he brushed a loose strand of hair out of her face and behind her her ear, and said, in a cracked voice, "I'm fine Cecily, honestly. You shouldn't-" He felt another coughing fit coming in, but held it back as much as he could for Cecily's sake. He continued in a strangled voice, "Worry, not about me. I'm going to miss you, though," He said, looking in to her deep blue eyes.

message 7: by Ananya, Group Creator (new)

Ananya (ananyashenoy) | 1360 comments "I'll miss you too." she said, sadness layering her voice. "I'll try to come meet you sometimes if Charlotte lets me. She has to let me. You can't be all alone in here." she said determinedly. She sat down by his bedside. "I hope you recover soon." she said. "It's going to be so lonely without you." she sighed and was quiet for a few moments. Then finally, she asked "Did you eat breakfast?"

message 8: by Genevieve (new)

Genevieve Carstairs (mirandacarstairs) | 1022 comments "Charlotte told me she was going to bring it in," Gabriel supplied, his chest heaving slightly with every word. "I don't have much of an appetite, however." In fact, the thought of eating right now repulsed him. He clutched his chest with one hand on an attempt to keep it from shaking. "I don't want you to get sick, either." He said, looking up and her, hoping the coughing attack he felt wouldn't come until Cecily had left. He didn't want her to pity him. "But I do want to talk to you," Looking as though an idea had popped up in his mind, he hurriedly continued. "Maybe we could trade notes! Or something along those lines. You could slip a paper with a message on it under my door, I'd read it and slip one back out the other way! It would be like sending letters, almost."

message 9: by Ananya, Group Creator (new)

Ananya (ananyashenoy) | 1360 comments Cecily's face brightened. "Maybe we could." she said. "That would bethe most wonderful thing in the world!" she got up. "I think Ihave to go now." she said. "Will worries too much about me. I'll tell Charlotte to get your breakfast here." she walked to the door and turned around one more time to face him. "I'm really going to miss you." she said, feeling like crying all over again, seeing him like this.

message 10: by Genevieve (new)

Genevieve Carstairs (mirandacarstairs) | 1022 comments Gabriel wanted to ask her to stay, he wanted to be close to her, to feel her warmth against him, but he knew he couldn't do that. If she got sick, he wouldn't ever be able to forgive himself. So instead, he just nodded and mustered a feeble smile. "I'm really going to miss you, too. Just... Promise to write, please?" It sounded more like he was going on a long distance trip, rather than just being locked up. Feeling terrible for being another burden upon Cecily, Gabriel laid back down on the bed, turning over to face the wall. "Goodbye," He whispered into the pillow.

message 11: by Ananya, Group Creator (new)

Ananya (ananyashenoy) | 1360 comments "Bye." Cecily said, hearing him even though he spoke very softly. "I'll see you soon." she turned and walked out of her room before she could change her mind.

((Cont @ the dining table?))

message 12: by Genevieve (new)

Genevieve Carstairs (mirandacarstairs) | 1022 comments ((Okay, do you want to post first?))
Gabriel heard the door close, and shut his eyes trying to fall asleep.

Genevieve Carstairs (mirandacarstairs) | 1022 comments ((Okay, thanks!))

message 15: by Ananya, Group Creator (new)

Ananya (ananyashenoy) | 1360 comments Gideon slowly walked towards his brother's room, highly favouring his good leg. When he'd stood up before, he'd realized that he could walk pretty well if he ignored the pain. His leg was healing. He was determined to walk as much as he could. He was tired of sitting around all day. He slowly opened the door of the room, not bothering to knock because he knew Gabriel shouldn't talk too much. He saw his brother lying on the bed. He didn't know whether he was asleep or not so he said softly "I've come to apologize."

message 16: by Genevieve (new)

Genevieve Carstairs (mirandacarstairs) | 1022 comments Gabriel laid on the bed, willing himself to sleep, but to no avail. Feeling quite bored indeed, he was about to pick up his book again when Gideon walked into his room... And apologized. Lifting one eye open, Gabriel said, in an almost teasing manner, "What for?" He knew he shouldn't be pushing his brother for more, even after he had already gotten the apology, but he couldn't help himself. "Please be specific, for all I know you're apologizing for borrowing my trousers without asking when we were younger. Which I still haven't forgiven you for, if you were wondering," He smirked slightly, opening his other eye and pushing himself into a sitting position with much effort. Gabriel suspected he was having one of those 'good periods' of the sickness, where you almost feel healthy. However, he knew it couldn't last, and he'd soon be doubled over coughing again.

message 17: by Ananya, Group Creator (new)

Ananya (ananyashenoy) | 1360 comments "You know what I'm apologizing for." Gideon said, limping into the room. "Don't make me say it." his voice was quiet and subdued. "Thank you for agreing to stay." he continued. "I know you don't like it in here." he stood there for a while, not saying anything, looking at his brother. "You seem very happy." he said. "Not that it's not good but what happened?" he sat down at the edge of the bed. "You're not delirious, are you?"

message 18: by Genevieve (new)

Genevieve Carstairs (mirandacarstairs) | 1022 comments "I don't think I'm delirious, but usually my vision doesn't swirl like it is doing right now," Gabriel joked. However, upon seeing his brother's worried expression, he assured Gideon, "I'm only kidding." Gabriel grinned slightly and then said, happily, "If you must know why I'm in such a good mood, it's because Miss Herondale and I agreed to exchange notes." Looking over at his brother, Gabriel remarked, "And I only agreed to stay for the duration of the quarantine, which by the way you're completely ruining the purpose of it.' But after the quarantine, I expect I'll have the houses back, and I can live in one of them." Gabriel wanted to ask Gideon if he'd come live in the houses, but Gabriel knew he'd never agree to it.

message 19: by Ananya, Group Creator (new)

Ananya (ananyashenoy) | 1360 comments "Gabriel, you are not going to get any of the houses." Gideon said, seeing that his brother was stuck to that hope. "I know enough of shadowhunter law to know that the clave is going to confiscate all of father's property. They will feel it is necessary because he has disgraced shadowhunters." He gave Gabriel a warning look. "Don't say anything. Let me finish." he paused. "And even if you do get the houses, how are you going to support yourself? You don't have a secure job and it will not be easy to get one." he looked at his brother, waiting for an answer. "Now you can talk." he said.

message 20: by Genevieve (last edited Jun 15, 2014 05:13AM) (new)

Genevieve Carstairs (mirandacarstairs) | 1022 comments Gabriel struggled for a good response to his brother, a new weight suddenly appearing on his shoulders.''B-but they couldn't have taken our inheritance, right?" He asked desperately, voice loud, his life plans deteriorating before his very eyes. "That was rightfully ours!"' Gabriel yelled this last part, which he immediately regretted because this was what ended the 'good period'. He instantly doubled over in a terrible coughing fit, a shaky storm of convulsions and hacking, his eyes watering in pain. Once the worst of it had gone, he looked down at his chest, not wanting to meet his brother's eyes. "I'm pathetic," He whispered, eyes leaking slightly from pain. Gabriel bit his lip to stop it from trembling, cursing himself for being so weak.

message 21: by Ananya, Group Creator (new)

Ananya (ananyashenoy) | 1360 comments Gideon wanted to do something for his brother but he could not so he helplessly watched as Gabriel coughed. When he stopped, Gideon put his arm around Gabriel's shoulders in a brotherly fashion, slightly shocked that he could feel his sharp shoulder blades. "You are not pathetic." he said. "You are the only person I know who could act sarcastic when they had pneumonia. You should have seen me. I could hardly talk." his voice turned serious. "I don't know what we have any more." he said. "They could have taken everything away from us. I don't know." he was quiet for a while. "I guess it's just the two of us left." he said. "We're the last of the Lightwoods."

message 22: by Genevieve (new)

Genevieve Carstairs (mirandacarstairs) | 1022 comments Gabriel suddenly felt very sick in his stomach, as though he finally realized the gravity of his situation. "Gideon," He began, voice shaking terribly. He looked into his brother's eyes, his own face bearing a look of horror. "What if- What if I die from this?" Face paling, Gabriel turned a light shade of green, panic clear in his eyes. "What if I don't make it out of this alive?" He looked helplessly down at his hands, as though contemplating how little control he had in whether or not he survived his sickness. "I don't want to leave you alone," Voice small, Gabriel looked like a small child who had run away from home- lost, helpless, and guilty.

message 23: by Ananya, Group Creator (new)

Ananya (ananyashenoy) | 1360 comments "You are not going to die." Gideon said, very firmly. "You will survive this and you will be healthy after it. You are not going to die." he gave him a comforting hug, hoping Gabriel wouldn't turn out to be right after all. "Charlotte is getting the Silent Brothers here." he said. "They will heal you." he looked down so that Gabriel wouldn't see the worry in his own eyes and then he spoke again. "But you were going to leave, weren't you? To see if we still own our house, our inheritance?" hus voice was bitter as he spoke, even though he did not mean for it to be.

message 24: by Genevieve (new)

Genevieve Carstairs (mirandacarstairs) | 1022 comments "Of course I was!" Gabriel sounded almost shocked that Gideon had to ask. "I grew up expecting to get these things when I came of age, and it's not as though I'm going to completely rearrange all the plans I had for my life!" His voice shook with anger, not towards Gideon, but rather at the situation itself. Then, he unclenched his fists, and his shoulders sagged slightly, his fighting spirit gone. "Who am I kidding? I know-" He stopped short, taking a shaky breath, as though he were bracing himself, before continuing. "I know that we most likely will never see the houses nor the inheritance ever again." He looked distraught, like a man who had gambled away his savings in less than a night. "We'll have to love off of Charlotte's goodwill, we'll have to survive off of someone else's charity." He spat the last word, looking petulant. Hating the prospect of having to ask Charlotte for any more help, Gabriel wanted to just pinch himself and wake up from what seemed to be a nightmare. He wanted to go back to the days where his father, Gideon, his mother, himself, even Tati were close, where they did things as one happy family. But was that all just an image? He thought to himself miserably, Was mom ever truly happy? Were we ever really a happy family?

message 25: by Ananya, Group Creator (last edited Jun 15, 2014 05:18PM) (new)

Ananya (ananyashenoy) | 1360 comments "This is a shadowhunters institute." Gideon said, willing himself to keep sitting there. He knew Gabriel was saying this just because he was very upset and he didn't want to spoil everything by leaving as had happened the last time they talked like this. "Nobody here has anything left to live for except this place." he continued. "Will, James, Tessa, even Charlotte. The institute is their life and they don't have anything else to live for." he looked at Gabriel. "You have to understand we might have to live like that too. I'm telling you we don't have anything left. You have to understand that." he nearly shouted the last words, for once, almost losing his temper. He took a deep breath to calm himself down. "I know you want to leave." he said "And I told you it was your choice but do you really want to live like that? With nobody there to care for you?"

message 26: by Genevieve (new)

Genevieve Carstairs (mirandacarstairs) | 1022 comments "Of course I don't!" Gabriel practically yelled at his brother, his eyes wild. "But I don't want to live off of someone else's charity, either. Gideon," He said, his voice shaky, but no longer as loud and angry as it had been before. "If I left this place, and I started a new life, would you still care for me? Would you still perry about me? Because, if you still cared for me, I wouldn't live In a world where no one cared about me, since you'd care for me." He spoke gently now, his tone even. "I still don't know what I want to do when the quarantines over, but the Angel knows I'll have enough time to think about it locked up in this room. I know that if you truly wanted to, we could make it on our own, yet you seem wedded to this place? Why?" But as soon as he asked the question, he remembered Gudeon's expression towards the maid, Sophie. "Is it Sophie?" He asked, excitedly.

message 27: by Ananya, Group Creator (new)

Ananya (ananyashenoy) | 1360 comments "If it was only Sophie that kept me bound here, you would be bound here because of Cecily." Gideon said shortly. "If she cannot keep you here, I don't know what can. You should know, she will be heartbroken if you leave." he stared into the distance for a minute, not saying anything and then said "If you leave, I don't think I will ever stop worrying about you but do not expect meto help. I have tried my best at making you stay here and love peacefully but if you want to leave..." he took a shuddering breath. "You will be on your own, to mae your own life and live with your own impulsive decision."

message 28: by Genevieve (last edited Jun 15, 2014 05:49PM) (new)

Genevieve Carstairs (mirandacarstairs) | 1022 comments Gabriel shuddered slightly at the prospect of having to pick up a mundane job, and having to live in a cramped apartment in one of the bad parts of London. "I never said I was going to do it," He said carefully, feeling slightly guilty at lashing out at his brother like that. "Just that I wasn't ruling out the option. I don't want to leave you behind, Gideon," Gabriel looked up into his brother's eyes, which he rarely did since, standing up, Gabriel was much taller than Gideon. But now, Gabriel felt as small as a child again, looking up into his brother's eyes, instead of down.

message 29: by Ananya, Group Creator (new)

Ananya (ananyashenoy) | 1360 comments "I remember you saying that you really wanted to do it." Gideon said coldly. "That you did not have any family left." he could almost feel the anger radiating offf himself now. He had come here to apologize but now he felt he was going to say some worse things he would have to apologize for. He looked at Gabriel angrily. "You know I'm angry." he said "And you know how bad I feel about everything and yet, you still keep reminding me about it."

((Gtg soon))

message 30: by Genevieve (last edited Oct 26, 2014 10:36PM) (new)

Genevieve Carstairs (mirandacarstairs) | 1022 comments Gabriel's mouth fell open, he had not intended to anger his brother at all! He looked down, forcing back the tears that were welling in his eyes, "I-I wasn't trying to-" He stopped, realizing he had no idea what he was going to say. Looking back up at his brother once more, he could feel the tear that fell out of his eyes as it rolled down his cheek, leaving a warm, moist trail as it trailed down. "I just don't want to lose you again is all," His voice was small, and his hands were shaking. His eyes spread in panic as he realized he was about to have another coughing attack. He fell over on the bed, subdued by crippling coughs that tore through his entire body. His throat felt dry and cracked, and his eyes were watering with enough liquid to flood a small town.

message 31: by Ananya, Group Creator (new)

Ananya (ananyashenoy) | 1360 comments "Gabriel!" Gideon exclaimed, alarmed. He roughly grabbed hold of his shoulders and soothingly rubbed his back. "It's okay." he said. "You're going to be allright." his voice was soft. "Just breathe. Stay calm." he knew he should not have said what he said and now felt he was the cause if this but then, he hadn't realized Gabriel would take it like this. "Don't talk any more." he said. "I don't want to....I can't see you like this. I'm sorry for what I said. I was too angry. I wasn't thinking clearly." he sat there, waiting for Gabriel's cough to subside.

((Gtg.))

message 32: by Genevieve (new)

Genevieve Carstairs (mirandacarstairs) | 1022 comments Gabriel wanted to reply, but his throat felt as though it were closing up, slowly growing in upon itself. Lungs pressured, it was almost as if they were two balloons about to pop, pushing against his ribs while doing so. He gasped for breath, but it felt like all the oxygen had been sucked out of the room, leaving him aimlessly opening and closing his mouth to no avail. Vision going blurry, Gabriel felt faint. Then all of a sudden, it stopped, and he could breath again. He sucked in a huge, rambling breath, shivering madly while doing so. He collapsed onto the bed, weakened and out of breath, his chest heaving, glad to be able to breath again. "I forgive you," Was all Gabriel could manage at the time, and he hoped it would be enough for his brother.

message 33: by Ananya, Group Creator (last edited Jun 16, 2014 03:25AM) (new)

Ananya (ananyashenoy) | 1360 comments "It's okay." Gideon whispered. "Thank you." his face was pale as he looked at Gabriel struggling to breathe. "Do you want some water?" he asked slowly. He had known what it was like to have pneumonia and there were moments when he felt that he would die. It was agonizing seeing Gabriel like this and he didn't think he could see any more. "Don't talk." he said. "It'll just make everything worse."

message 34: by Genevieve (new)

Genevieve Carstairs (mirandacarstairs) | 1022 comments Gabriel opened his mouth to speak, but closed it, heeding his brother's instructions. Instead, he just nodded to signify that he did want water, since his throat felt about as cracked as dropped porcelain. He was breathing easier now, but his breaths were still jarred and his head was still throbbing in pain. He laid on the bed, unable to push himself into a sitting position, focusing on breathing more than anything.

message 35: by Ananya, Group Creator (new)

Ananya (ananyashenoy) | 1360 comments Gideon closed his eyes for a second and then got to his feet, wincing horribly as he stood on his bad leg. He had forgotten how badly it hurt. He started limping outside but turned around when he was at the door. "Don't move until I come." he said. "Please. Just....wait for me to come back." he walked out of the door, leaving Gabriel there alone.

message 36: by Genevieve (new)

Genevieve Carstairs (mirandacarstairs) | 1022 comments Gabriel scowled, wanting to let his brother know that he couldn't go anywhere even if he wanted to. Instead he just lay there, the only sound in the room his jarred breathing, each breath cutting through what should've been silence in a coarse manner. He helplessly licked his lips, hoping to keep them from getting chapped, and hoping that his mouth would soon be less dry.

Genevieve Carstairs (mirandacarstairs) | 1022 comments ((Ya, sure.))

message 42: by Genevieve (new)

Genevieve Carstairs (mirandacarstairs) | 1022 comments Gabriel hoped his brother would come back with the water soon. He had heard the crash from outside his room, and knew that would delay Gideon, but he still couldn't help but feel a tad impatient. His throat was dry and threatening to crack, and his breathing was heavy. Looking over at the door, he silently willed it to open, to no avail. Resting his head back down on his pillow, Gabriel laid there silently, looking up at the ceiling and absentmindedly counting his breaths.

message 43: by Ananya, Group Creator (new)

Ananya (ananyashenoy) | 1360 comments Gideon walked into the room with the glass of water, fully aware that he had taken far too much time to get it. "Sorry." he said, avoiding Gabriel's eyes. "I got unavoidably detained." he looked down at him, wishing he could do something else to help him other than bring him a glass of water. "Here." he said, handing him the glass of water and sitting down by the side of the bed.

message 44: by Genevieve (new)

Genevieve Carstairs (mirandacarstairs) | 1022 comments Gabriel paused himself up, wincing at the pain. Reaching out, he took the water, his hand shaking horribly. As he brought it to his lips, his trembling hand twitched hard enough to make him spill water over himself. Gabriel looked crushed and defeated, slamming the water glass down on the nightstand next to him in a fit of anger, causing water to spill on the floor as well. "I'm so useless," He said, closing his eyes in pain. "I'm probably going to need someone to help dry up the water, too," Looking resentful, he grimaced slightly.

message 45: by Ananya, Group Creator (new)

Ananya (ananyashenoy) | 1360 comments Gideon winced. Knowing Gabriel's character, he knew he was very upset now that he could hardly move. "That's okay." he said. "I'm here to help." he picked up the glass of water and held it in his own hand. "You're not well Gabriel and you don't have to act like you are." he held the glassto his brother's mouth. "It'll just make everything a lot worse." he thought about what Sophie had said about Cecily. He hoped she was with her brother. If she wasn't, Gabriel would get to know sometime and that would spoil everything. Gideon knew his brother just too well.

message 46: by Genevieve (last edited Jun 19, 2014 11:33PM) (new)

Genevieve Carstairs (mirandacarstairs) | 1022 comments Gabriel reluctantly took the water, feeling worthless as he did. This is what I've been reduced to, he thought miserably as the water trickled down his dry throat. Needing help to drink. It's pathetic. As he finished what was left of the water, he could hardly keep his mind from wandering. Removing his lips from the glass, he looked up at Gideon, and asked, his voice slightly less cracked thanks to the water, "What was that loud crash I heard from the hallway?" He could tell from the way Gideon flushed that it was something quite embarrassing.

message 47: by Ananya, Group Creator (new)

Ananya (ananyashenoy) | 1360 comments "I banged into Sophie." Gideon said shortly "And I stopped to talk to her for a moment. That's why I took so long." he held the glass up again. "You should drink some more." he said. "You need it." he was caregul not to mention what he had been talking about to Sophie. He hoped his brother would not get to know of Cecily's disappearance till after she was found. He had understood that Cecily was some of what was keeping Gabriel tethered to the institute.

message 48: by Genevieve (new)

Genevieve Carstairs (mirandacarstairs) | 1022 comments Gabriel squinted at his brother, and pushed himself upright again, biting his lip to keep from crying out in pain. He hadn't expected the simple act of sitting up to take such a physical toll on him, and he was unpleasantly surprised to discover so. However, Gabriel knew his brother was withholding information from him, he could tell by the way Gideon had carefully changed the subject. "I don't need any water," Gabriel said, pushing the glass away, his hands still shaking violently. "But please tell me the full story of what happened between you and Miss Collins, I know you left something out."

message 49: by Ananya, Group Creator (new)

Ananya (ananyashenoy) | 1360 comments "There is nothing to tell." Gideon said firmly. "I told you everything." he held the glass up again. "You should drink the water. You're not okay." he pushed his brother back down onto the bed again and pressed his lips together. He cursed his inability to hide anything from Gabriel. It was very annoying.

message 50: by Genevieve (new)

Genevieve Carstairs (mirandacarstairs) | 1022 comments Gabriel was quite annoyed that his brother had pushed him back into a sleeping position, especially after he'd had to strain himself to sit upright. Not having enough energy to sit back up, Gabriel resigned to laying there, feeling quite like a child due to the way his brother was treating him.' "I know I'm not okay," Gabriel said, reluctantly accepting the water Gideon was forcing upon him. "That's why I'm here. But you don't kneed to treat me like I'm twelve, I'm perfectly capable of handling whatever information you're withholding," Gabriel put out his hand in a 'stop' gesture to signal that he didn't need any more.
