Once Upon A Fairy Tale discussion

I like a good combination of contemporary style and whimsical exposition. Writers like Rosamund Hodge, Robin McKinley, and even Heather Dixon hit that combo at some points in her novel Entwined. Now, that does not mean I will not read contemporary or whimsical on their own, but some of my favorite retelling's have a combination.

I'll read anybody with a distinctive voice--and I prefer a literary voice. And by that, I mean not trite, with some individuality and personality--whether it's humor or whimsy or drama or bite. (Even a contemporary page-turner can be literary).
I've got a sad, secret list of DNFs that had a great concept, whose blurb filled me with high hopes, but I felt like I was reading the newspaper, and I just couldn't go on.
But I know that my tastes are personal and much more fussy than most readers', so I simply keep silent about those unfinished books--I concentrate on boosting the writing that I find delicious.

definitely prefer a modern voice, first person narration as opposed to the third person omniscient narrator.
