Detective Rob Ryan, aka Adam, is in the murder squad with a perfect partner, when they are asked to solve the murder of a 12 year old girl found in the same woods he was found in at age 12, twenty years before, catatonic with shock and with absolutely no memory of what he was doing in the woods with his two year old friends who have never been found. Needless to say that in working this disturbing case, his emotions are roiled with wondering about what happened that summer 20 years before. No one but his partner knows his past as his family moved away after that summer and started calling him by his middle name.

This is not a simple tale, and throughout we are swept along with Ryan's view and experience of these events. What surprised me, starting this novel that I fully expected would be 2, or at the most 3 stars for me given that it is a psychological thriller, is some of the beautiful writing when describing the area and other things. This novel isn't chalk full of it, after all it's a murder mystery, but those parts were quite lovely.

I plan to read the next one in the series and then will decide if I'll read the the third.

Although I quite liked the second book, The Likeness, many people didn't like it nearly as much as the others in the series.

They don't need to be read in order, as they seem to focus on different characters (keep in mind I've only read the first two, so far).

So, unless you "need" to read them in order, you might want to try one of the others to help you decide if you want to continue reading them?

Cindy is right - you do not need to read the books in order. Each book focuses on a detective who was featured in a previous book, but there is very little correlation between the storylines, each book is a new case.

I don't have a huge desire to read more of the books, except to read The Likeness because it features Cassie. I am reluctant to pick it up though because if she destroys her in the course of the book I might just be too angry to finish. And now I see that you didn't rate it in the 4-5 stars with the rest of the books. That makes me even more nervous.

I didn't get to it this month ... but it fits BESTSELLERS as well ...

Okay, well I just brought home the second and third ones; I hadn't realized that each one focuses on a different person. Sometimes I like this, but sometimes it's rather annoying. I've heard that the third one is good, so perhaps I'll read that one first and then go back to the second which is also here. I was able to get Faithful Place in a Playaway audiobook from interlibrary loan and will try that, although I'm listening to Villette on CDs in the van, etc, so it might have to wait. That second one, The Likeness, seems to be the weakest one then.

And here I was hoping to find out what happened next to Adam Ryan.

I read it because I needed an Ireland book and someone posted that there was a deal on the kindle version recently, so I bought it. This kindle is going to cost me too much money, I think!
I really like my e-ink kindle with NO lights in it and someone in another GR group helped me learn how to get the books on it without using wifi (by first downloading them to my Kindle for PC, etc--but they can't just appear on there, they have to be downloaded, etc). Now I can keep it on airplane mode all the time.

I'm still waiting. I do think he is mentioned in The Likeness - but only a passing remark or two.
