This is the story which is told in the perspectives of five lifelong friends who refer to themselves as the “Chowder Society”. They gather together regularly and share ghost stories with each other. After the mysterious death of one of the members strange things begin happening in the fictional town of Milburn. As the story progresses members of the Chowder Society start getting picked off one by one. The remaining members begin to realize that the death and unusual happenings in the town might have been triggered by something that the members did in their past which means that it's up to them to stop the other worldly force that's terrorizing their lives. The biggest complaint I have for this novel was the first half which I felt was somewhat slow and seemed to drag in places, all that happens in the first half of the novel was an introduction to the characters and their relationships to one another. That being said I very much enjoyed the last half of the novel. Parts from the beginning that seemed to be a waste of time are suddenly tied in with the climax which would make rereading this novel even better because now you’ll know which parts from the first half ties in with the ending. I also enjoyed how subtle the paranormal elements were at the beginning and how they gradually built up during the climax. I would only recommend this novel to someone who prefers a “slow burn” type of novel or if you’re interested in novels which deal with paranormal elements.
