Totally agree with you. Best read so far this year. Brian's a superb presenter too if you have him as an author visit to school. Our kids (and staff) have devoured his books since he came last year.
He comes and runs his Write Like an Author holiday camp here at school. My daughter went along last year (sadly she can't do this year... blasted ballet!) and loved it! He has 17 kids signed up at the time of writing!Love his work! And his sister is my neighbour!
Gosh, what an amazing book, I couldn't put it down. There is one scene in the book where it is suggested that Egan and Reggie get intimate but I think the author deals with it appropriately for this age group and it would probably go over the heads of some students. I agree with Penny that it would make a good read aloud for year 8s. I think both boys and girls will love this and I can't wait to recommend it to some students.
Totally agree with all the comments. I read 'Shooting Stars' in one sitting - just couldn't put it down. By far the best read this year. I will widely recommending this book.

It deals with some really nitty-gritty subjects (abuse, drug use, homelessness to name but three) but all through the eyes of the quite naive, and very likeable main character, Egan. He has a strong moral code which would definitely allow for some interesting discussions.
I think it would make a great readaloud for Year 8s - as there is plenty of scope for discussion, and some tough issues to grapple with...
It is difficult to compare it to anything else, but the survival elements of it reminded me a little bit of Hatchet.
