Just finished this book and I have to say I really enjoyed reading it. I knew it was going to shed light on some tough topics but I didn't expect to enjoy the story as much as I did. I'd probably recommend this as more of a Grade 7-9 read and definitely think it's worthy of sharing in classrooms. I think a teacher led Read Aloud would probably be the best route with this one to really dig into all the themes and issues presented. I think students will be able to relate with Lily and Dunkin in wanting to just fit in with the crowd in school and I think students will see that although we are all different we are all very much the same and deserve empathy and kindness, not judgement. It definitely gave me some insight into transgender issues and bi polar disorder. The only thing I didn't like was the ending. I felt it wrapped up a bit too quickly and a little too happy which kind of took away from the impact of the book.

Dana | 20 comments I agree with you, I thought the ending was a little too tidy, otherwise I liked that the book had more mature themes in a way younger readers could understand. I think I'm going to mark it as a mature book in my room (I've copied Pernille's idea with mature reads).

I just came across another book that also tackles this topic but is geared for younger students aged 9-12. It's called George by Alex Gino. Haven't read it yet but hear it's really good.

I finally read Lily and Dunkin! I met the author at ILA17 in Orlando which was an added bonus. I really liked the book and will recommend it. I agree with others that most of our schools would probably have it in grade 7 and up classrooms and libraries. I liked how Gephart portrayed the characters and I think students will relate to the characters. I also think our students will see empathy and caring for those who may be different than they are. I can see great conversations centering around Vasquez's character!

I especially liked this review:
