Miranda Welle | 6 comments There was a book I read as a kid that I'd love to find again.

A girl was brought on land for a specific couple but an older lady found her and kept her instead. She wasn't actually human and if she returned into the ocean, she'd become a dolphin (I think) again so she always avoided it. Towards the end, she had to make a decision (to save a friend that was drowning I think) and ended up going in and transforming back and could never live on land again.

Any ideas?

A long shot - Seagirl by H.L. Blake?

Miranda, around what year did you read this book?

Could she have been a selkie (seal shifter) with the story set in Britain?

It would have been around 1996.

I just looked up Seagirl and I don't think that's it. :( Thank you so much for trying to help!

Maybe it's Daughter of the Sea?

SBC (essbeecee) | 1594 comments This doesn't involve transformation, but the movement out of the sea and back into the sea (with dolphins) fits - The Music of Dolphins by Karen Hesse.

One dolphin transformation book I know of is Dianne Wolfer's Dolphin Song, but I'm not sure if that's just dream sequences or if the girl actually transforms.

Unfortunately no. I remember that the she was a baby when the lady found and took her and that, through magic, she was even able to nurse her. From there, I have little memories until the end where (I think her friend was drowning) and she had to make the decision to enter the ocean and turn back into a (dolphin/selkie/???) or let her friend drown.

I read the book several times around 1996 or so.
