May 2017 Mini Challenges
In! *****finished at 1130 pm on 5/31. Nothing like getting it in under the wire*****1. May 6 is the Kentucky Derby: Read a book with a horse on the cover, or one that appears somewhere in the book (Hint: Dick Francis books are ideal for this one).
2. It’s National Barbecue Month, National Hamburger Month, National Salad Month, May 11 is Eat What You Want Day, May 15 is National Chocolate Chip Day, and the 20th Pick Strawberries Day: Read a book about food or with food on the cover.
3. The 2nd week of May is Wildflower Week, May 8 is Iris Day and May 30 is Water a Flower Day: Read a book about flowers or with flowers on the cover.
4. May 4 is Star Wars Day: May the Fourth Be With You — The fourth book of any series, that is, or the fourth single title (non-series) book an author has published. **
5. May 16 is Wear Purple for Peace Day: Read a book with a (mostly) purple cover, or that at least has a purple spine. Or, read a book that has the word “peace” or “purple” in the title (e.g.: The Color Purple, Harold’s Purple Crayon, Riders of the Purple Sage, Writers of the Purple Sage, Purple Rose of Cairo).
Heather L wrote: "Here are your May 2017 Mini Challenges!.... ** Here’s an easy tip for finding the fourth book of a series. Go to your GR bookshelf (the “My Books” tab above). In the search field, enter the number 4. This will bring up a list of books that are fourth in a series and tell you whether you have read it yet or not. Be warned, it will also bring up books numbered 14, 24, 34, etc., but it’s an easy way to find a fourth book. Remember that it doesn’t have to be a mystery...."Thanks so much Heather - I had no idea about this helpful hint!

This also works if you need a specific word in a title or author's name -- Green, for example -- but it brings up every instance of Green in your GR book collection. The number thing also brings up (in Heather's example), books with a 4 in the publication date, in the number of ratings, in the average GR rating, etc., if you have those columns on your shelves.
Hmmmm. The problem with book 4s is I want to be at that point in the series. Although there are series where that does matter. Poirot #4 is The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. Nero Wolfe #4 is The Red Box. I haven't read either of those and have them on my Nook. Of course book 4 in the Toby Peters Mystery series is The Howard Hughes Affair. That is my next book up in that series. Then there is Terry Brook's Landover series. Book 4 is The Tangle Box, I have read the first 3 in the series. Choices, choices...
I'm in, too. The hardest part will be waiting til May 01 to start reading some of these.1. May 6 is the Kentucky Derby: Read a book with a horse on the cover, or one that appears somewhere in the book.
2. Read a book about food or with food on the cover.
3. Read a book about flowers or with flowers on the cover.
4. May 4 is Star Wars Day: May the Fourth Be With You — The fourth book of any series.
5. May 16 is Wear Purple for Peace Day: Read a book with a (mostly) purple cover, or that at least has a purple spine.

Thanks for the list. I may use the Victoria Laurie book.
fyi - Confession is the 9th book in the Jenny Cain series. (I noticed because I've read up to that one.) Not sure why it came up with #4. Marriage Is Murder is 4th in the series.

Oops, corrected my post as I have actually read through book five in that series. No idea why it came up, unless it picked up the number in the publishing date, 1994. As I said, not a flawless system, but it can be useful. ;-\

This is weird... I grabbed a couple of books from the library this week, not even knowing what the May challenges were. But, I thought I'd hold off starting them, just in case, and guess what!?!? I can use both! One is from the Hannah Swenson Mystery series, so it's perfect for a book about food. The other one is The Last Coyote, which just happens to be the fourth book in the Harry Bosch Series! Woo-hoo! :) I thought I was going to have trouble with that one since I prefer to read books in order. ;) :)

Here are your May 2017 Mini Challenges!
RULES
** Books DO NOT all have to be mysteries. You can use any genres.
** A book can only be used once for this challenge, but can be used for other challenges (Seasonal, World Trip, Ultimate, etc.).
** You DO NOT have to choose books in advance, and can change your mind at any time if you do.
** Do as many as you are able and have fun!
Or, read a book that has the word “peace” or “purple” in the title (e.g.: The Color Purple, Harold’s Purple Crayon, Riders of the Purple Sage, Writers of the Purple Sage, Purple Rose of Cairo... War and Peace, Peace Like a River, A Separate Peace).
Remember that it doesn’t have to be a mystery.
Here are some of the “fourth” books I found on my shelf that I need to read yet and are up next in a series for me (I am one of those people who prefers to read series books in order): To Brie or Not to Brie by Avery Aames, Deadly Notions by Elizabeth Lynn Casey, City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare, Obsession by Marshall Cook, Into the Fire by Jeaniene Frost, Mr. Monk and the Two Assistants by Lee Goldberg, Julius House by Charlaine Harris, Zach’s Law by Kay Hooper, Killer Insight by Victoria Laurie, Chesapeake Blue by Nora Roberts.
