Play Book Tag discussion

Written as a series of journal entries by Colonel Alan Forrester on his expedition to be the first to explore the Wolverine River in Alaska and his wife Sophie left behind in Washington. The entries are interspersed with other historical entries from the time along with photos and letters from the Colonel's great nephew to a museum in Alaska. Though the book is entirely fiction it reads like fact and immersed me in Alaska, 1885. Parts of the book ripped my heart out and others made me happy. There is a small amount of magical realism but it fits in well with the time setting. I liked this book better than her previous book The Snow Child, I especially thought the ending was better in this book. I would love to be able to spend some time with the Colonel and Sophie.

I'm glad you loved it. It wasn't fir me, perhaps because, like you say, it reads like a non-fiction book and I find it hard to get immersed in non-fiction.

I loved this book and I'm happy to see other people who love it as well.

I like that while I'm reading fiction, I'm actually learning something. I enjoyed learning about Native myths of Alaska, about hummingbirds and early photography.

Besides that I really loved Colonel Forrester's and Sophie's love story.

I'm definitely going to have to check this one out. I grew up on The Snow Child, but never thought to look up Ivey's other books. Sounds like a great read.
