I'm ashamed to say that I haven't read Dead Heat yet. I'm curious to hear from those who HAVE read it. Should I bump it up on my "to-read" list? Right now I love how it feels to have a new Dick Francis waiting for me, but I'm also afraid of being disappointed. Also, do you think Felix will be able to fill his father's shoes in the future?

I just joined this group and also just finished Dead Heat. I enjoyed it very much. It is co-authored by Dick's son. I do not know if he is turning the reins over to his boy or what. But I liked the book very much.CB
I would definitely recommend "Dead Heat" as a very good read. His hero is not a jockey, but there is a horse-racing connection. Having just re-read his first book, @Dead Cert", the magic is still there. What strikes me most though is that the young Dick Francis wrote with the smell of the racecourse in his mind. His last book has the benefit of many years of living life to the full.
I think it's fantastic that he's still going strong after more than forty years in the literary saddle!!
Sorry I have to disagree. I found some very annoying traits not witnessed before with Dick Francis' books, and I have read and enjoyed every one so far. So many times there's a paragraph of rhetoric questions, all of which are too obvious and therefore unnecessary. And the author too often repeats known facts, again and again.Otherwise the plot and story line were great...just those little annoyances.
