She is on to something by discarding the title of the “struggling reader.” That is a label that sticks from year to year, and it is hard to overcome the title, even when you possess the ability to earn a new title. Everyone is trying to become better, even I, myself an avid reader, could give myself the title of “developing reader.” For example, this year, I am developing my non-fiction reading abilities.
All readers, regardless of their reading titles, need to learn how to become passionate about reading. I remember the two books from my elementary school days that dramatically changed my willingness to read. The books that were recommended to me by my oldest brother were not the ones that I enjoyed. He enjoyed them, and wanted me to read them, but they didn’t interest me. He enjoyed science fiction; I enjoyed fairy tales and fantasy. I really love the idea that the author gave surveys to her students, and then made specific recommendations for her students. I agree with her, that this is how to make all readers become passionate readers.
