Was anyone else disappointed in the latest Strout book?I loved My Name is Lucy Barton but Anything is Possible took me to places I did not want to revisit and reconnected me to people I was content to let be.....

I too found it difficult to love this book and at times I felt lost altogether. Not her best but still love her writing.

It was dark and hopeful at the same time. I was absorbed for the two days I read and loved it. The characters were thoughtfully drawn and while the feelings were intense, it felt very true to me.

I too was disappointed in this book. It seems like Burgess Boys and Lucy Barton was the beginning of Elizabeth Strout's downward spiral for me...this will be my last book of hers to read (and I have read 6).

I found this book a chore to read and very dark. It was not a pleasure to read and for the most part found it very disturbing. I loved Olive Kittridge and Lucy Barton. I like the short story format but the characters were very creepy.

Nancy A I found the unrelenting pessimism of each life depressing.....a series of dead ends with very few silver linings.....!

Nearly 20 years ago, I was enthralled by AMY AND ISABELLE. I can even remember where I read it, sitting in my backyard on summer mornings, before work. I felt the author was so talented at showing the emotions every character felt. EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE simply relates events (grim events) and the reader can understand how a character might feel but not actually feel it.

I felt lost through this book. I do feel disappointed….as if I missed entirely what others are raving about.

My sentiments exactly

The book is icky. Its main theme is shame. I don't want to have that feeling. I wish I had not read the book. I liked Lucy Barton and Olive Kitteridge though!

Alicia This is an interesting perspective: the theme of shame...it might help me understand my disquiet with these stories as compared to her other work. Tha ...more

It was just OK for me ... I had a hard time caring about the characters. I, too, am confused by all the rave reviews so thank you all for letting me know I'm not alone. Someone mentioned that most of the characters were just weird, some even creepy, and I have to agree. Not a particularly enjoyable read on many levels. The writing was very good but it wasn't enough to make me give it more than three stars.

I detested this book. It was pointless and went no where. Horrid ending. This seems to be some kind of new writing style which most are not capable of carrying off.
