Anne Hawn Smith (hawnsmith) | 146 comments This is the sixth year I have done the Reading Challenge and, while I didn't always make it, I have advanced tremendously as a reader. I've made myself finish books long on the shelf, and read genre I have never heard of much less read. I have finished up a number of series that I was woefully behind in, read books in each Dewey Decimal category and read strange books simply because they were the only one that would fit a Popsugar category.

Popsugar is, hands down, my favorite and the source of most of the growth I have experienced. I have read books just because the spine was a certain color or the cover had a cat on it and found a new voice, that spoke to me like none other ever had.

The most important was my exposure to books from nations I could hardly locate. I have listened to an African voice I never heard before and lived in circumstances I couldn't imagine. I look forward to the things I know I will learn this year and the changes they will make in my life.

Anne Hawn Smith (hawnsmith) | 146 comments I've been watching myself beginning to clear my shelves of the books that are taking up space and turning them into a feeling of accomplishment. Given that I am currently reading 46 books that is going to be a tall order, but it is better than the 72 I started with. I didn't read them all off the list, I looked over the older books that I started and then sent back to the library to finish later. There were a lot that I would have to start over again with, so I put them back in the "To Read" section. I also took some off because I am 71 years old and have over 1,000 books on my Kindle alone and at least 10 bookcases surrounding me. Some of those books will never be read, so I pulled them from the list. That left me with about 56 books.

Lots of my books are quilting, knitting, cross stitch and sewing books, so they are never "finished." I did put a number of craft books, especially knitting that have a lot of reading in them on my list of books to read. I'll ease them in when I am reading something long and don't have much to post.

Then I got down to business and cleared 10 books out by finishing them. I'm amazed! Some have been on the list for years. Now before I put another book on the list, I think about what it would take to finish it and compare it to my life. I've stopped being such a dabbler and resisted the impulse to switch to a different book when the one I'm reading hits a slow spot. It's simple, but it is working.

Anne Hawn Smith (hawnsmith) | 146 comments It is amazing to me how differently I feel about the books I have on my lists now that I have started these challenges.

I was beginning to see my "Currently Reading" shelf as a ball and chain. It was so hard to get back into those books even though I wanted to read them.

By putting them on my challenges, I am eager to get to them. I like to see those statistics move and there is such satisfaction in finishing one. I just finished a book that was not on any of my challenges other than the 101+ books I wanted to read. It hadn't been hanging around for ages and it was fiction, so it couldn't fit Dewey Decimal or any of the other categories. The only thing I could say extra about it was that it was an Audible book which I already owned. What a disappointment, even though the book was good.

I know some people don't like double dipping, but it works for me if I keep it to a minimum. I am mainly looking at using books that I have already in my library, bought and paid for...not just for the numbers. I am still going to go way over my 101 books. I am already at 79. The challenges stimulate me to read more and in a more disciplined way and that is what the challenges are all about.

Anne Hawn Smith (hawnsmith) | 146 comments I hate to make myself another challenge, but I really need this one and it doesn't fit most of my other challenges.

I need to read more of my physical books. I actually need to read my Kindle books and Audible, but they aren't sitting on my overstuffed shelves.

A number of my books are pretty big, so I think I will start with only 1 per month plus 2 shorter books. Since this is the beginning of June, it's a good place to start. I'm listing the books I want to target and some others I can do quickly in case I get bogged down with the bigger ones.

Challenge - read 8 books from "Currently Reading List."

1 Vatican Malachi Martin
2 Texas - Michener

Anne Hawn Smith (hawnsmith) | 146 comments Note: There are 4 lists here, but the total of the 4 lists is 60 books. Some categories have more than I expect to read.

Every year I have to have at least one challenge that helps me get rid of some of the hundreds of physical books I have on my shelves. I also need to check off some of the Audible and Kindle books too, but they don't take up physical space. However, I have paid for them, so they are haunting me. I am limiting the e-books to ones I have paid over $5 for, or are on a subscription list like Scribd. I am also going to try to do an Audible Challenge of 10 books

This list does have books that I have used on other challenges this year, so I am going to try to read 60 with at least 10 of them physical books and 20 from my Currently Reading List.
