T.C. Slonaker | 83 comments What are you reading now that you really like or would like to discuss?

message 2: by Lacey (new)

Lacey (crazdwriter) At the moment I have just barely started a book that my husband bought me called Supernatural Serial Killers chilling cases of paranormal and deranged fantasy. I'm also reading The Spiritual Power of Empathy develops your intuitive gifts for compassionate connection and Bullies, B******s, and B*****s how to write the bad guys of fiction. (Sorry about that title)

message 3: by T.C. (new)

T.C. Slonaker | 83 comments Hmm. A "how to write bad guys" book could be very helpful. Took me a while to figure out that first B word, ha ha!

message 4: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Carter (bysarahannecarter) | 6 comments I just finished Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult - a lot to digest after that one!

message 5: by T.C. (new)

T.C. Slonaker | 83 comments This is embarrassing. I know Jodi Picoult is uber-famous, but I've never read anything by her. What kind of books does she write?

message 6: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Carter (bysarahannecarter) | 6 comments This is the first book of hers that I've read ... it was fiction, but about race relations in America.

message 7: by T.C. (new)

T.C. Slonaker | 83 comments Ooo, that's a topic I really get into. Thank, I'm going to put that one on my to-read list!

message 8: by Tammy (new)

Tammy (stampingtammy) | 30 comments Currently reading The Distant Hours and listening to Wish You Well. Both are very good so far. Was about a 1/4 of the way into Fahrenheit 451 and my audio expired so on the waitlist to get back into that one.

message 9: by T.C. (new)

T.C. Slonaker | 83 comments Ooo, yes, you have to finish up Fahrenheit 451. Interesting premise! I liked it.

message 10: by T.C. (new)

T.C. Slonaker | 83 comments Anyone read the Harry Dresden series? I'm seeing good reviews for it.

message 11: by Michele (new)

Michele (momrisner) I just started reading "Jonathan Unleashed" by Meg Rosoff. I'm only about 25 pages into it so far.

message 12: by Tammy (new)

Tammy (stampingtammy) | 30 comments I am currently listening to Hidden Figures and The Zookeepers Wife. I listen to one on the way to work and the other on the way home. Taking me forever! :) Both are very interesting so far.

message 13: by T.C. (new)

T.C. Slonaker | 83 comments Never heard of that one, Michele. You'll have to let us know what you think as you go on.
Tammy - I'm doing kind of the same thing. I could only get the audio versions of the books I wanted to read from the library, so I listen to them when I ride my bike. But The Prophet is 19 hours long, so that means some long bike rides ahead!

message 14: by Tammy (new)

Tammy (stampingtammy) | 30 comments I put holds on the ones I want from the library and then they suddenly all become available at once! I have been waiting on these two for quite awhile so I figured I would fit them both in.

message 15: by T.C. (new)

T.C. Slonaker | 83 comments That happens to me all. the. time! And I'm a slow reader, so I do a lot of renewing.

message 16: by Rachel N (new)

Rachel N (rachelsarahn) | 7 comments Currently reading "Dear Leader: Poet, Spy, Escapee--A look inside North Korea." I've ready a number of books written by North Korean defectors, most of whom were poor and spent ample time in the gulags. They are equally horrifying and inspiring to read. This man, though, was in the upper levels of authority with direct contact with Kim Jong-Il. His insight is unmatched. I'm about half way through the book right now and it is the most insightful look at this dictatorial regime that I have read so far.

message 17: by Tammy (new)

Tammy (stampingtammy) | 30 comments I just added a North Korean defector book to my list recently. I love reading stories of survival and overcoming but have never read anything about North Korea. I love historical like you
mentioned in your introduction and seem to get pulled into WWII era and holocaust survival stories a lot.

p.s. Is there any way to reply/tag someone's previous comments when on your phone? I can't seem to be able to figure it out - might just be a feature on web version.

message 18: by Tammy (new)

Tammy (stampingtammy) | 30 comments I finished up The Zookeepers Wife and Hidden Figures during vacation. Both were very interesting. I recently read the Autobiography of Martin Luther Ling Jr and Hidden Figures gave new insight into the civil rights movement for me. I read a lot of WWII history / historical fiction and never really thought about WWII and the civil rights movement in parallel timing and the significance of fighting for the freedom of one group of people while another group was being affected by some very similar laws and losses of freedom. That was a small mention in the book, but stood out to me since I'm a fan of WWII history.

message 19: by T.C. (new)

T.C. Slonaker | 83 comments Ooo, all interesting topics! I Really get into the holocaust books, too. I never even imagined there would be books out there on a current situation like North Korea. I might have to read that book too. I also like Civil Rights stories. I don't know why I hadn't thought of looking at Hidden Figures. I guess I hadn't heard enough about it.

Tammy, I have had that problem with my iPhone too. Though, usually on the phone, I am on Goodreads through the browser. I wonder if it would be different on the Goodreads app.

message 20: by Tammy (new)

Tammy (stampingtammy) | 30 comments The Hidden Figures movie is great too.

I'm most always in the Goodreads app. I think maybe you just can't tag/link in the app. Will have to try it from the browser.

Midge | 10 comments T.C. wrote: "This is embarrassing. I know Jodi Picoult is uber-famous, but I've never read anything by her. What kind of books does she write?"

I have read a lot of her books and liked them all.

message 22: by Midge (new)

Midge | 10 comments Currently reading "A Dog's Way Home", one of the dog books by Bruce Cameron. Good but not as good as "A Dog's Purpose".

message 23: by T.C. (new)

T.C. Slonaker | 83 comments My daughter is very into dogs. She keeps looking at A Dog's Purpose, but she's afraid it will be too sad.

message 24: by Jana (new)

Jana I'm currently on the second book of The Young Elites series by Marie Lu. YA novels. I love Marie Lu so much. This series is fun because I thought it was going to follow the current YA transcript (teenage girl, weak and with problems, finds who she really is and saves society, falling in love with the bad-boy-turned-good-guy in the process). Mostly, it does, but the end of the first book had me audibly gasp, because she threw in a wicked plot twist that had me unsure of what would happen now. Fun series, so far. :)

message 25: by T.C. (new)

T.C. Slonaker | 83 comments Ooo! I LOVE wicked plot twists!

message 26: by T.C. (new)

T.C. Slonaker | 83 comments I read the Divergent series a while ago, but I didn't realize there was a prequel called, "Four". Just started reading it, and I am enjoying it. Roth writes really well!

I'm also reading 1984. (Something about all the books I read lately are numbers!) Wow. Such open political thoughts.

message 27: by Tammy (new)

Tammy (stampingtammy) | 30 comments Just finished A Long Way Home, the book that inspired the movie Lion. Writing was not the best, but it was still a heartwarming story about. small boy lost in India, adopted by an Australian family, and his path to find his family.

message 28: by T.C. (new)

T.C. Slonaker | 83 comments Aww, that sounds sweet!

message 29: by Midge (new)

Midge | 10 comments Reading Beneath Copper Falls by Colleen Coble. It is part of a series of some really good books based in UP Michigan where it is very cold. There are guide dogs who help find people in the snow, some who do not want to be found.

message 30: by T.C. (new)

T.C. Slonaker | 83 comments I've really enjoying psychological thrillers. Just wish the language wasn't so bad.

message 31: by Nathan (new)

Nathan Bush | 13 comments I'm a third of the way through my current read. A great book so far, written by our own TC, Amity of the Angelmen

Amity of the Angelmen (Angelmen #1) by T.C. Slonaker

message 32: by T.C. (new)

T.C. Slonaker | 83 comments 😄 Thanks, Nathan! Glad you like it.

message 33: by Tammy (new)

Tammy (stampingtammy) | 30 comments I'm currently listening to Navigating Early, a YA novel. Enjoying it very much.

message 34: by Tammy (new)

Tammy (stampingtammy) | 30 comments Also ran across a fun podcast about books. It is called What Should I Read Next? https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/w...

message 35: by Midge (new)

Midge | 10 comments After reading the Preparedness Guide and dealing with Irma I need a break. Now reading "The Alice Network" by Kate Quinn. It is historical fiction that switches back and forth to a time during WW1 in 1915 and in 1947, very good so far.

message 36: by Tammy (new)

Tammy (stampingtammy) | 30 comments Currently reading The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics and LOVING it! Written in a very engaging manner and I love a good underdog story.
