Do you mean Elizabeth Peters? She wrote Crocodile on the Sandbank, which you've linked to. Elizabeth George is a different author; she wrote the Inspector Lynley series.

I like Elizabeth Peters' books. Crocodile on the Sandbank is the first in her Amelia Peabody series, a fairly light, fun mystery series, set in the late 19th/early 20th century. The archaeology background is real; the author was an archaeologist herself. Some of the characters are based on real people, and real archaeologists appear as background characters.

I like her books. The archaeology is authentic, and her style is humorous while she pulls you into\ the situations the characters find themselves in.

This is one of my favorite series! Loved watching these characters grow. And the 'parenting' in these books was priceless. I was so sad when it ended.

Yes I did mean Elizabeth Peters! Thanks for that correction. Is there any cuss words and it or not?

I think there might be an occasional 'damn', but nothing worse than that. There are references to characters cursing, but the curse words don't appear on the page - that's over the whole series, not just this book.

I second the sentiments. One of my favorite series. I have also listened to audiobooks of this series and enjoyed that very much! Laugh out loud minutes.

Love Amelia! She's my second favorite bossy woman. Lucia in the E.F. Benson series is the first.

I like Elizabeth Peters. And Elizabeth George too, for that matter. :)

Loved this series! It's one of the ones I go back to when I want a funny read with a strong story line. Though the Amelia Peabody series is all I've ready by Ms. Peters. I keep meaning to read some of her other work, but haven't gotten to it yet.

A few years ago I got addicted to the Amelia Peabody series and read them all. Time well spent!

I discovered Elizabeth Peter's Amelia Peabody Novels in the mid 1980s and enjoyed them tremendously. I don't think I'd characterize them as *great*. They were fast, entertaining reads with a sense of authenticity I really appreciated r/t to the author's archaeological knowledge.

I just finished Crocodile on the Sandbank tonight. Highly entertaining and fun! I read straight through yesterday and today which is a sure sign I'm having a good time. I love Amelia and I very much enjoyed the Victorian Egyptian setting. I have a friend who describes addicting books you can't but down as "Book Crack." This definitely falls in that category.

The Elizabeth Peters series featuring Amelia Peabody is good fun reading, and a good mystery too. She was an archaeologist, so that adds to the excitement. You can count on them to make you feel relaxed and happy. I have them all.

Elizabeth George's series featuring Inspector Lynley was wonderful until What Came Before He Shot Her. That book and the following ones are almost like another person wrote them: illogical, wordy, boring.

I love the Amelia Peabody mysteries. I have always been interested in archaeology, and enjoy experiencing it vicariously. I have grown quite fond of the characters in Ms Peabody's family, and I find myself laughing out loud at their antics in each and every book in the series.

I love this series! I was introduced to it in the library when I checked out the books-on-tape (back when things came on cassette!). The narrator was brilliant, I think her name is Barbara Rosenblatt. The nailed all the voices. Since then, every time I read these stories I hear her voice as Emerson, Peabody, Nefret. Delightful! It really scratched my itch for Indiana Jones/Hercule Poirot rolled into one.

Elizabeth Peters was the pen name of successful romantic suspense novelist, Barbara Michaels, the pen name of Barbara Mertz.

Her works are EXCELLENT reads!

Crocodile on the Sandbank was her breakout novel, riding the middle ground between romantic suspense, mystery, and thriller, leading to the bestseller list.

Adding to the fun, Mertz was a a real life archaeologist, so all the historical stuff is spot on. I got some of the in-jokes, such as when a team of diggers told Howard Carter he would never find anything over in a pile of rubble he wanted to stake out.

There's plenty of comedy and thrills as Peabody and Emerson find a way to team up and go on to a series of thoroughly entertaining adventures.The characters grow and develop and are addictive. If the books grab you, prepare for binge reading.
